Forced by the death of her parents to seek her fortune in London, Fanny Hill is duped into prostitution by an old procuress. In Mrs Brown's bawdy-house the na ve young woman begins her sexual initiation - progressing from innocence to curiosity and desire - and soon embarks on her own path in pursuit of pleasure, until she at last finds true love. John Cleland's story of Fanny's rise to respectability was denounced after its publication by the then Bishop of London as 'an open insult upon Religion and good manners', while James Boswell called it 'a most licentious and inflaming book'. But beside its highly entertaining and boisterous depictions of a startling variety of sexual acts, Fanny Hill stands as one of the great works of eighteenth-century fiction for its unique combination of parody, erotica and philosophy of sensuality.

'Fanny Hill' scandalised thousands of Victorians with its vivid descriptions of sexual pleasure yet this only heightened its allure - and today is appreciated as a true erotic classic.Fanny Hill is a blushing country maiden until tragic circumstances force her to seek a new life in London. She is taken in by the motherly Mrs Brown, but on her first night she receives a rather unorthodox welcome from one of the young ladies in the house - and swiftly gains a much more explicit idea of what is expected in her new role. Fanny takes to carnal pleasures with gusto, and she vividly recalls each lusty encounter, every thrusting conquest, in her saucy, voyeuristic and thoroughly irresistible memoirs.

One of the most prosecuted and banned books in history.* * *The classic novel of a young girl's exploration of physical pleasures.Young Fanny Hill is tricked into a life of prostitution, but she quickly learns the power of her own body as she learns the ways of physical passion. She soon escapes her fate for the loving arms of a wealthy young man, but misadventure and fate conspire to keep her from domestic bliss.Instead, Fanny discovers that sex need not be just for love; that it can be had for pleasure. She then sets out to explore those pleasures in as wide a variety as she can. With old men and young, and women as well; in positions of power, and situations where she has none; either watching or participating, Fanny's journey through the realms of sexual pleasure is a literary tour-de-force.Presented with classically bawdy illustrations from fin-de-siecle French artist Paul Avril, and an introduction placing the work in historical context, this complete, unexpurgated edition is the ultimate presentation of the original erotic novel.

John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure has been described as the first erotic novel in English and is perhaps the greatest example of the genre. Cleland's novel is a triumph of literary style, resting on his invention of an entirely new, vividly metaphoric, terminology for describing sexual pleasure.

Over a century before 50 Shades of Grey, novels of feminine passions had been setting the stage and bending the morals laws which made erotica novels possible. Fanny Hill is an erotic novel by English novelist John Cleland. One of the most prosecuted and banned books in history, it has become a synonym for obscenity. Venus in Furs is a novella by the Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, and the best known of his works. The novel draws themes, like female dominance and sadomasochism, and character inspiration heavily from Sacher-Masoch's own life. Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. This edition is a collection of these three erotica classics, perfect for study or inspiration for your own writing muse.

Of all of John Cleland's novels, Memoirs of an Oxford Scholar is the one that has been suppressed for the longest time. The notorious Fanny Hill has been called the most famous banned book of all time and yet it has been more or less freely available to the interested reader since its initial publication in 1749. Memoirs of a Coxcomb, the sequel to Fanny Hill, has been similarly available. This edition of Memoirs of an Oxford Scholar will introduce readers to a ribald masterpiece too long suppressed and will add dimension to the already considerable reputation of its author, John Cleland. John Cleland (1709-1789) was educated at the Westminster School. He spent his early adulthood in Smyrna as British Consul and in India as an employee of the British East India Company. He later returned to England where he devoted himself to the study of philology, writing essays on the nature of language and contributing columns to the Public Advertiser.

Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (commonly known as Fanny Hill), the most famous erotic novel in English, was denounced by its author as 'a Book I disdain to defend, and wish, from my soul, buried and forgot'. Cleland's critics too condemned the 'infamous' and 'poisonous' novel when it first appeared in 1748-9. But the proliferation of editions, adaptations, and translations since then bears witness not only to the popularity of scandalous novels, but also to the book's literary merit. Recounted with a lively use of metaphor and some curiously moral asides, Fanny Hill's boisterous education as a London prostitute never quite effaces the ingenuous charm of her country upbringing, and her story places her among the great heroines of eighteenth-century literature. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Is the lesser-known companion to Cleland's infamous Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, and an intriguing and accessible alternative to more familiar eighteenth-century novels. Witty and complex, with erotic elements, it is also a sophisticated comedy of manners that questions eighteenth-century ideas of masculinity and femininity.
