  • - Where Will You Spend Eternity?
    af John Bunyan
    73,95 kr.

When evil persons have gone in a life of sin, and find that they have reason to fear the just judgment of God, they begin at first to wish there were no God to punish them. Then little by little they persuade themselves that there is no God, and look for arguments to back their opinion. John Bunyan's Visions of Heaven & Hell is a true story, not an allegory or fictional book. In it he describes how he almost succumbed to the indoctrination of an atheist, but for the intervention of Divine Love. John was conducted to Heaven to see the glories of what should be the inheritance of all who put their faith in Jesus Christ. From Heaven, John was transported to Hell to witness the eternal torments of damned souls. The conversations he had with lost souls in Hell, including a notable atheist, are all described in Visions of Heaven & Hell-Where Will You Spend Eternity?

WHEN, by the good hand of my God, I had for five or six years together, without any interruption, freely preached the blessed gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ; and had also, through His blessed grace, some encouragement by His blessing thereupon; the devil, that old enemy of man's salvation, took his opportunity to inflame the hearts of his vassals against me, insomuch that at the last, I was laid out for by the warrant of a justice, and was taken and committed to prison.

John Bunyan was an English preacher, but today he's most famous for writing the seminal Pilgrim's Progress, one of history's most famous and popular allegorical works. Bunyan even has a festival in his honor within the Church of England. Though not as well known as Pilgrim's Progress, Justification by an Imputed Righteousness is an important treatise Bunyan wrote about how Christians can save themselves: "No Way to Heaven but by JESUS CHRIST. I. By justification with God, we stand clear, quit, free, or in a saved condition, in the approbation of His holy law. II. By justification with men, we stand clear and quit from just ground of reprehension with them. All by the imputation of the righteousness of Jesus Christ, in which we have faith working by love."

How would John Bunyan have written Pilgrims Progress if he had lived today instead of the 1600s? "Pilgrims Progress in Today's Language and Today's World" recreates the John Bunyan classic and sets it in today's culture. John Bunyan's theological views are much different than those of many Christian church goers today. Bunyan would heartily agree with J.I. Packer's statement: "North American Protestantism: 3,000 miles wide and half an inch deep." Even more shockingly, John Bunyan's spiritual take on the politics of his time set in today's political environment might stun liberals and conservatives alike. Each chapter of this book tries to faithfully mirror the corresponding chapter in the original work. Many commentaries on Pilgrims Progress were studied to keep this book as authentic as possible. Scriptural references were inserted next to the relevant text so you can understand John Bunyan's theological purpose. At times the author, Pat Campo, had to rein in his creativity to preserve John Bunyan's book structure and theological message. For example, beginning in Chapter 7 (Christian Arrives at the Wicket Gate) the book's setting becomes more spiritual and less worldly. It's also the reason the original character names and chapter titles were kept so you can easily compare this book to the original Pilgrims Progress and decide for yourself the similarity of the two books. The purpose of this book is to make Pilgrims Progress clearer, more relevant and meaningful to today's readers. If you've never read Pilgrims Progress, this book will give you the meaning of it without having to wrestle with archaic language. Get it now to discover what Pilgrims Progress would look like set in today's world.

John Bunyan (baptised 30 November 1628 - 31 August 1688) was an English writer and Baptist preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. Bunyan came from the village of Elstow, near Bedford. He had some schooling and at the age of sixteen joined the Parliamentary army during the first stage of the English Civil War. After three years in the army he returned to Elstow and took up the trade of tinker, which he had learned from his father. He became interested in religion after his marriage, attending first the parish church and then joining the Bedford Meeting, a nonconformist group in Bedford, and becoming a preacher. After the restoration of the monarch, when the freedom of nonconformists was curtailed, Bunyan was arrested and spent the next twelve years in jail as he refused to undertake to give up preaching. During this time he wrote a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and began work on his most famous book, The Pilgrim's Progress, which was not published until some years after his release. Bunyan's later years, in spite of another shorter term of imprisonment, were spent in relative comfort as a popular author and preacher, and pastor of the Bedford Meeting. He died aged 59 after falling ill on a journey to London and is buried in Bunhill Fields. The Pilgrim's Progress became one of the most published books in the English language; 1,300 editions having been printed by 1938, 250 years after the author's death. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on 30 August, and on the liturgical calendar of the United States Episcopal Church on 29 August. Some other churches of the Anglican Communion, such as the Anglican Church of Australia, honour him on the day of his death (31 August). We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public.
