In this book, Hobson examines the economic policies of protectionism and argues that they are harmful to both domestic and international economies. He suggests that protectionist policies, such as tariffs and trade barriers, are often used to benefit certain industries or groups at the expense of others. Hobson also argues that protectionism can lead to economic inefficiencies and reduce overall economic growth.Hobson provides historical examples of protectionist policies and their effects on economies, including the British Corn Laws and the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act in the United States. He also analyzes the political and social motivations behind protectionism, such as nationalism and the desire to protect domestic industries.Throughout the book, Hobson advocates for free trade and argues that it is the best way to promote economic growth and prosperity.
