Er setzt sein Haus im Dörfli wieder instand, damit Heidi den Winter dort verbringen und die Schule besuchen kann. Dabei überzeugt Heidi den Geissenpeter, lesen zu lernen. Heidi es una niña que, huérfana desde muy pequeña (y cuyo nombre verdadero es igual al de su madre, Adelaida), queda al cuidado de su joven tía Dete. Apenas la mujer encuentra una buena oportunidad de trabajo, lleva a la niña a vivir a la aldea de Dörffi en la comuna suiza de Maienfeld con su abuelo, a quien no conocía, y a quien los habitantes llamaban "El Viejo de los Alpes", por ser casi un ermitaño. Heidi es cautivada por la vida en los Alpes, donde lleva un contacto directo con la naturaleza. Ahí conoce a Pedro, un chico que se encarga de pastorear a las cabras de los aldeanos, quien se convertirá en el mejor amigo de la pequeña y en su compañero de aventuras.
