Dans le Discours sur l'economie politique, Rousseau forme deux elements essentiels de sa pensee politique: la notion de la volonte generale et la distinction entre souverainete et gouvernement. Pourtant, la place centrale qui revient a cette oeuvre ne lui a pas ete reconnue. D'abord publiee (en 1755) comme article de l'Encyclopedie, elle a longtemps ete consideree comme marquee par l'influence de Diderot. Son objet, l'economie, semblait etranger aux preoccupations essentielles de Rousseau. Il analyse le processus d'invention de la volonte generale et l'emergence des problemes decisifs lies a cette notion; il restitue son sens a l'economie politique dans la pensee de Rousseau; il situe son intervention, centrale parce que singuliere, dans les debats de son temps. C'est sans doute ce qui fait aussi son interet present: parce que l'administration des choses, a ses yeux, doit dependre de celle des hommes, Rousseau lie les questions du patriotisme, de l'education publique a celles de la propriete et de l'impot. Pigmalión, rey de Chipre, buscó durante muchísimo tiempo a una mujer con la cual casarse. Pero con una condición: debía ser la mujer perfecta. Frustrado en su búsqueda, decidió no casarse y dedicar su tiempo a crear esculturas preciosas para compensar la ausencia. Una de ellas, Galatea, era tan bella que Pigmalión se enamoró de ella, cobrando vida gracias a la intervención de Afrodita. En Las metamorfosis de Ovidio, se relata así el momento: Pigmalión se dirigió a la estatua y, al tocarla, le pareció que estaba caliente, que el mármol se ablandaba y que, deponiendo su dureza, cedía a los dedos suavemente, como la cera del monte Himeto se ablanda a los rayos del Sol y se deja manejar con los dedos, tomando varias figuras y haciéndose más dócil y blanda con el manejo. Al verlo, Pigmalión se llena de un gran gozo mezclado de temor, creyendo que se engañaba. Volvió a tocar la estatua otra vez y se cercioró de que era un cuerpo flexible y que las venas daban sus pulsaciones al explorarlas con los dedos. Al despertar, Pigmalión se encontró con Afrodita, quien, conmovida por el deseo del rey, le dijo: mereces la felicidad, una felicidad que tú mismo has plasmado. Aquí tienes a la reina que has buscado. Ámala y defiéndela del mal. Y así fue como Galatea se convirtió en humana. Para Bernard Shaw, tres aberraciones desnaturalizaban la realidad ante la mirada de los demás: el esnobismo, el cant (versión agresiva del formalismo virtuoso) y el sham, antiguo tabú sexualista o del pudor. A lo largo de su vida profesó muchas creencias, a menudo contradictorias. Esta inconsistencia fue en parte una provocación intencionada. En un tema, al menos, se mantuvo constante: en su negativa a lo largo de toda su vida a seguir las formas normales de ortografía y puntuación del idioma inglés. Prefirió formas de escritura arcaicas como shew por show; eliminó la u en palabras como honour y favour; y en la medida de lo posible rechazó el apóstrofo en contracciones como won't o that's.
