280,95 - 420,95 kr. 1889. The English historian Gairdner's valuable and painstaking contributions to English history relate chiefly to the reigns of Richard III, Henry VII and Henry VIII. He begins his biography of Henry the Seventh: Never was king so thoroughly disciplined by adversity before he came to the throne as was King Henry VII. Without a father even from his birth, driven abroad in his childhood owing to the attainder of his family, more than once nearly delivered up to his enemies and owing life and liberty to his own and his friends' astuteness, his ultimate conquest of the Crown was scarcely so much a triumph of ambition as the achievement of personal safety. Contents: Early Life; Attainment of the Crown; Settlement in the Kingdom; Rebellion of Lambert Simnel; The War in Brittainy; The War with France; Perkin Warbeck and His Friends; Ireland; Henry's Foreign Policy; Domestic History; Prosperity and Alliances; and Henry VII and Castile. 285,95 - 303,95 kr. ""The Houses of Lancaster and York with the Conquest and Loss of France"" by James Gairdner is a historical book that explores the tumultuous period of English history known as the Wars of the Roses. The book provides a detailed account of the reigns of the Lancastrian and Yorkist monarchs, including Henry VI, Edward IV, and Richard III, as well as the key battles and political events that shaped this era.In addition to covering the domestic politics of the time, the book also delves into England's foreign policy and military campaigns, particularly its efforts to conquer and hold onto France. Gairdner provides a nuanced analysis of the various factors that contributed to England's successes and failures in this regard, including the role of key figures such as Joan of Arc and the impact of changing political alliances.Overall, ""The Houses of Lancaster and York with the Conquest and Loss of France"" offers a comprehensive and engaging overview of one of the most fascinating periods in English history, making it an essential read for anyone interested in this era or in medieval European history more broadly. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

- An Historical Survey
596,95 - 729,95 kr. This four-volume history argues that the origins of the English Reformation lie in the Lollard movement of the fourteenth century. First published in 1908, Volume 1 focuses on the history of the Lollards before the Reformation, and the question of royal supremacy during the Tudor period.

545,95 kr. No English king has been the subject of more heated debate than Richard III. In this 1898 revised edition of his classic biography, Gairdner attempts to produce a more balanced analysis of the sources than most earlier writers. While largely accepting the anti-Yorkist position shown by Thomas More and Shakespeare, he does reject some of the crimes attributed to Richard, such as the murder of his brother George, Duke of Clarence. He states at the outset that Richard was not a monster but the product of his times, when violence and ruthlessness were common political weapons. He also offers a more rounded picture of the king, showing good points as well as bad, rather than a caricature of evil. The most significant addition to this edition is the substantial appendix on the imposture of Perkin Warbeck, making use of continental sources hitherto unknown to English historians.
