- or, The Benedictines: a legend of the Rhine. By: James Fenimore Cooper: Novel
163,95 kr. James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 - September 15, 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William on property that he owned. Cooper was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and, in his later years, contributed generously to it.He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Society, but was expelled for misbehavior. Before embarking on his career as a writer, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War and published in 1821. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians, Cooper's works on the early U.S. Navy have been well received, but they were sometimes criticized by his contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.

Even though he is regarded as one of the key figures who contributed to the creation of a distinctly American literary sensibility, author James Fenimore Cooper spent a significant portion of his life living abroad in Europe. Structured as a series of letters written to various figures who played a role in Cooper's life overseas, this collection provides an interesting look at differences in European and American culture in the nineteenth century.

When customs are connected with principles, in their origin, development, or end, such records have a double importance; and it is because we think we see such a connection between the facts and incidents of the Littlepage Manuscripts, and certain important theories of our own time, that we give the former to the world. It is perhaps a fault of your professed historian, to refer too much to philosophical agencies, and too little to those that are humbler. The foundations of great events, are often remotely laid in very capricious and uncalculated passions, motives, or impulses. Chance has usually as much to do with the fortunes of states, as with those of individuals; or, if there be calculations connected with them at all, they are the calculations of a power superior to any that exists in man.

This book is the second volume of a two-part series that tells the story of a young Spanish noblewoman named Mercedes who embarks on a journey to the Far East in search of adventure and fortune. Set in the early 16th century, the story is based on the real-life voyage of Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer who led an expedition to Florida and the Gulf Coast of North America. In this book, Mercedes and her companions continue their journey across the Atlantic Ocean, encountering various challenges and dangers along the way. They eventually arrive in the New World, where they explore the wilderness and encounter Native American tribes. As they continue their journey, they face conflicts with other European powers who are also vying for control of the New World. Throughout the novel, Cooper weaves together themes of adventure, romance, and historical accuracy. His vivid descriptions of the landscapes and cultures encountered by the characters make this book a captivating read for anyone interested in the history of the Americas and the early explorers who ventured there.Columbus now ascended to the poop, where he got a wider and a better view of the ocean and the skies. The signs were, indeed, as portentous as they had been sudden in their appearance. The atmosphere was filled with a white mist, that resembled a light smoke, and the admiral had barely time to look about him, when a roar that resembled the trampling of a thousand horse passing a bridge at full speed, came rushing down with the wind. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The only things that left any doubt concerning the accuracy of this opinion, were the method and science with which he had often maintained, even in his own presence, the reasonableness of his geographical suppositions; arguments which, though they had failed to convince one bent on believing the projector a visionary, had nevertheless greatly puzzled the listener. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 198,95 kr. The plan of this tale suggested itself to the writer many years since, though the details are altogether of recent invention. The idea of associating seamen and savages in incidents that might be supposed characteristic of the Great Lakes having been mentioned to a Publisher, the latter obtained something like a pledge from the Author to carry out the design at some future day, which pledge is now tardily and imperfectly redeemed. The reader may recognize an old friend under new circumstances in the principal character of this legend. If the exhibition made of this old acquaintance, in the novel circumstances in which he now appears, should be found not to lessen his favor with the Public, it will be a source of extreme gratification to the writer, since he has an interest in the individual in question that falls little short of reality. It is not an easy task, however, to introduce the same character in four separate works, and to maintain the peculiarities that are indispensable to identity, without incurring a risk of fatiguing the reader with sameness; and the present experiment has been so long delayed quite as much from doubts of its success as from any other cause. In this, as in every other undertaking, it must be the "end" that will "crown the work." The Indian character has so little variety, that it has been my object to avoid dwelling on it too much on the present occasion; its association with the sailor, too, it is feared, will be found to have more novelty than interest.

227,95 kr. ""An Autobiography of a Pocket Handkerchief"" is a unique and entertaining novel written by James Fenimore Cooper. The book is narrated from the perspective of a pocket handkerchief, which tells the story of its life journey from being made in a factory to being used by different owners. The handkerchief is passed on from person to person, each with their own unique story and experiences. Throughout the book, the handkerchief becomes a witness to important historical events, such as the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The novel is a satirical commentary on the social norms and customs of the time, as seen through the eyes of an inanimate object. With its clever storytelling and witty humor, ""An Autobiography of a Pocket Handkerchief"" is a must-read for anyone looking for a unique and entertaining literary experience.""Well!"" exclaimed $25, ""this is the first ball I have been at that I was not thought good enough to have a place in the quadrille. 98,95 - 208,95 kr. It was near the close of the year 1780 that a solitary traveller was seen pursuing his way through one of the numerous little valleys of Westchester. The county of Westchester, after the British had obtained possession of the island of New York, became common ground, in which both parties continued to act for the remainder of the War of the Revolution. A large portion of its inhabitants, either restrained by their attachments or influenced by their fears, affected a neutrality they did not feel. The lower towns were, of course, more particularly under the domain of the crown, while the upper, finding a security from the vicinity of the Continental troops, were bold in asserting their revolutionary opinions and their right to govern themselves. Great numbers, however, wore masks, which even to this day have not been thrown aside; and many an individual has gone down to the tomb stigmatized as a foe to the rights of his countrymen, while, in secret, he has been the useful agent of the leaders of the Revolution; and, on the other hand, could the hidden repositories of divers flaming patriots have been opened to the light of day, royal protections would have been discovered concealed under piles of British gold.
