James Abram Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March to September of 1881. He was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed office seeker. Published in 1882, Garfield's oration on the life and character of General George H. Thomas focuses on the life and military career of his former commander. A Union General during the American Civil War, Thomas is particularly remembered for his decisive victory at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.
