Nous voulons savoir comment, étant donnés un jardin et des abeilles, une ruche se produit, quels sont tous les pas de l'opération intermédiaire, et quelles forces générales agissent à chacun des pas de l'opération. Vous tirerez de là, si bon vous semble, des conclusions non seulement sur les abeilles et leurs ruches, mais sur tous les insectes, et peut-être aussi sur tous les animaux.

" Les notes qu'on va lire ont été écrites par M. Taine durant un court voyage qu'il fit en Allemagne, en juin-juillet 1870, à la veille de la guerre franco-allemande. Ayant depuis peu terminé et publié l'Intelligence, il avait conçu le projet de faire sur l'Allemagne contemporaine un travail d'enquête psychologique et littéraire analogue à celui d'où, était sortie naguère l'Histoire de la Littérature anglaise. Il s'y était préparé, au cours de l'hiver précédent, par de nombreuses lectures et conversations dont quelques extraits ont été publiés dans sa Vie et Correspondance. Il s'était mis en route le 28 juin, et avait visité successivement Francfort, Eisenach, Weimar, Leipzig et Dresde; il allait se rendre à Berlin lorsque, le 12 juillet, il fut brusquement rappelé en France, non par les bruits de guerre qui ne paraissaient encore rien présenter d'irréparable, mais par un deuil de famille, la mort de sa belle-mère Mme Denuelle. La guerre déclarée, il renonça tout de suite à son projet de travail sur l'Allemagne: Nous ne pouvons plus être impartiaux, disait-il. Impartial, il s'était certes montré tel dans ses notes et observations, au cours de son voyage; mais cette impartialité même n'empêche pas qu'on ne trouve, à l'égard de l'Allemagne, des Allemands, de la science allemande, une sévère clairvoyance dans ces jugements écrits avant notre défaite de 1870: c'est ce qu'il ne nous déplaît pas de constater aujourd'hui, après notre victoire de 1918..."
