The relatively unknown public response to Vladimir Lenin's famous pamphlet "Ultra Left Communism: An Infantile Disorder." Herman Gorter (1864 - 1927) was a Dutch poet and socialist. He was a leading member of the Tachtigers, a highly influential group of Dutch writers who worked together in Amsterdam in the 1880s, centered around De Nieuwe Gids (The New Guide). Gorter shared in common with the Tachtigers an interest in leftist politics, and became the most politically involved of the group, becoming an active writer on socialist theory. He joined the Social Democratic Labour Party (Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij or SDAP) in 1897. In 1909 he participated in a schism from the SDAP to form the Social-Democratic Party (Sociaal-Democratische Partij) of the Netherlands. He wrote a massive new epic poem called Pan in 1912, describing the First World War being followed by a global Socialist revolution. In 1917, he hailed the Russian revolution as the beginning of that global revolution, although he soon afterward came to oppose Lenin. In 1918 the Social-Democratic Party changed its name to the Communist Party of Holland (Communistische Partij Holland), and in 1919 Gorter left the party. In 1921 he was a founding member of the Communist Workers Party of Germany, joining its Essen Faction and becoming a leading supporter of the Communist Workers International. Gorter died in Brussels in 1927.

This book is a basic text on Historical Materialism written for the common reader and not for other political theorists. It was used in political classes for workers in the council communist movement. It is even said to have had some influence on the early Chinese Communist movement.

In het gedicht "Een klein heldendicht" beschrijft Herman Gorter het intellectuele groeiproces van een arbeider en een arbeidster, die zich wenden tot het socialisme. Gorter had grote ambities met dit werk: "de lyrisch-epische uitbeelding der bevrijding van het menschengeslacht van elke sociale en geestelijke onderdrukking, door den strijd der arbeiders voor het socialisme, in zijn samenhang met het universele leven". Enkele jaren later zou hij met "Pan" een echt episch werk over dit onderwerp schrijven, maar het beknopte "Een klein heldendicht" is behapbaarder en daardoor populairder gebleven. "Een nieuwe lente en een nieuw geluid" is de overbekende versregel waarmee Herman Gorter zijn epische gedicht "Mei" begon. Gorter (1864-1927) was dichter en politicus. Hij was mede-oprichter van de Sociaal-Democratische Partij, de latere Communistische Partij van Nederland. Al begon hij als schrijver van sensitivistische poëzie, zijn beste werk is geëngageerd. Klassieke titels van hem zijn "Mei", "Een klein heldendicht" en "Pan".

Het imperialisme, de wereldoorlog en de sociaal-democratie (1915) is een bundel essays die gaan over de consequenties die de Eerste Wereldoorlog zou hebben voor de internationale arbeidersbewegingen. In de eerste twee stukken stelt Gorter dat de oorlog het resultaat is van het imperialisme. In het derde stuk roept Gorter alle Europese arbeiders op om in opstand te komen tegen de imperialistische bourgeoisie. Ook zouden alle arbeiders het kolonialisme moeten verwerpen. In het slotstuk analyseert Gorter de imperialistische aspiraties van Duitsland.-

'Een nieuwe lente en een nieuw geluid' is een van de bekendste regels uit de Nederlandse poezie. Het is afkomstig uit Herman Gorters epische gedicht Mei, dat maar liefst 4381 regels telt. In het gedicht wordt Mei opgevoerd als een personage, zij is de dochter van de Zon en de Maan, en Gorter bezingt op zintuiglijke, beeldende wijze de lente en de zomer. Maar bovenal is Mei een ode aan zijn liefde voor Wies Cnoop Koopmans. -
