Les oeuvres de jeunesse de Flaubert annoncent sa maturité par les thématiques. El tema de la prueba de fuerza con el Diablo le obsesionó desde su juventud, y concibió la idea de escribir este drama filosófico, poema fantástico de personaje único y de múltiples manifestaciones, en sus años de colegial en Rouen. Flaubert concibe en esta obra el mundo como un infierno y un vasto teatro, en el que se suceden las apariciones infernales. Igual que Dante, guiado por Virgilio, recorría los círculos del infierno, Antonio, llevado por el demonio, se desplaza en sueños por el espacio. Los nueve círculos del infierno dantesco aparecen aquí en forma de las tentaciones que se suceden, figuras demoniacas de los propios deseos del ermitaño, avivadas por la curiosidad intelectual.

Emma Rouault est la fille du riche fermier M. Rouault. Elle est élevée dans un couvent. Elle rêve d'une vie mondaine comme les princesses des romans à l'eau de rose dans lesquels elle se réfugie pour rompre l'ennui. Elle devient l'épouse de Charles Bovary, qui malgré de laborieuses études de médecine est un simple officier de santé. Emma est déçue de cette vie monotone. Une invitation au bal du marquis d'Andervilliers lui redonne la joie de vivre. Lorsqu'Emma attend un enfant, son mari décide de quitter la ville de Tostes et s'installer à Yonville. Emma fait la connaissance des personnalités locales: le pharmacien progressiste et athée M. Homais; le curé Bournisien; Léon Dupuis, clerc du notaire M. Guillaumin; le noble libertin Rodolphe Boulanger. Emma est déçue par la naissance de la petite Berthe, puisqu'elle aurait préféré mettre au monde un garçon. Elle s'enlise dans l'ennui, et perd tout espoir d'une vie meilleure. Elle n'éprouve plus aucun amour pour Charles, qui pourtant ne lui veut que du bien. Elle ne parvient pas non plus à apprécier sa fille, qu'elle trouve laide et qu'elle confie à Madame Rollet. Elle laisse libre cours à ses dépenses luxueuses chez son marchand d'étoffes, M. Lheureux. Elle repousse les avances de Rodolphe, et de Léon puis elle finit par céder. Ses amants sont vite lassés du sentimentalisme exacerbé de la jeune femme qui rêve de voyages et de vie trépidante. Emma accumule une dette envers M. Lheureux, qui exige d'être remboursé. Les amants d'Emma ont refusé de lui prêter de l'argent. Emma se suicide par désespoir. Charles de son côté, meurt de chagrin.

Gustave Flaubert est un écrivain français né à Rouen le 12 décembre 1821 et mort à Canteleu, en Seine Maritime, le 8 mai 1880. Gustave est le fils d'Achille Flaubert, chirurgien chef à l'hôpital de Rouen, et de Justine Caroline Fleuriot. Il a un frère ainé, Achille, brillant élève au profit duquel il sera souvent délaissé. Il passe une enfance sans joie, adoucie par l'affection qu'il porte à sa soeur Caroline, de trois ans sa cadette.

A French novelist, Flaubert led the way for the Realism literary movement in that country at a time that it was sweeping across Europe and the United States, and works like "Madame Bovary" are still wildly popular today. Three short works consists of the stories; "A Simple Soul", "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller", and "A Dance of Death".

It was at Megara, a suburb of Carthage, in the gardens of Hamilcar. The soldiers whom he had commanded in Sicily were having a great feast to celebrate the anniversary of the battle of Eryx, and as the master was away, and they were numerous, they ate and drank with perfect freedom. Far in the background stood the palace, built of yellow mottled Numidian marble, broad courses supporting its four terraced stories. With its large, straight, ebony staircase, bearing the prow of a vanquished galley at the corners of every step, its red doors quartered with black crosses, its brass gratings protecting it from scorpions below, and its trellises of gilded rods closing the apertures above, it seemed to the soldiers in its haughty opulence as solemn and impenetrable as the face of Hamilcar.

"A Simple Heart", also called Un coeur simple or Le perroquet in French, is a story about a servant girl named Felicité. After her one and only love Théodore purportedly marries a well-to-do woman to avoid conscription, Felicité quits the farm she works on and heads for Pont-l'Évèque where she immediately picks up work in a widow's house as a servant. She is very loyal, and easily lends her affections to the two children of her mistress, Mme Aubain. She gives entirely to others, and although many take advantage of her she is unaffected. She is the epitome of a selfless character, and Flaubert shows how true altruism - the reality of being truly selfless - is the reward in itself. Whatever comes her way she is able to deal with it.
