Gustave Flaubert est un écrivain français né à Rouen le 12 décembre 18211 et mort à Croisset, lieu-dit de la commune de Canteleu, le 8 mai 1880. Après avoir raconté son enfance, étouffée entre les murs d'un collège où il est la victime des railleries de ses grossiers camarades, le narrateur décrit sa passion adolescente pour une jeune femme mariée, croisée sur la plage, pendant des vacances à Trouville. Le jeune homme, timide, contemple de loin cette Maria, dont il s'efforce de deviner d'abord les formes du corps sous sa robe. Introduit peu après dans l'intimité du ménage, il lui parle avec respect et apprend qu'il partage avec elle les mêmes goûts littéraires. Un soir, alors qu'il fait avec cette amie une longue promenade en canot, il est près de lui avouer son amour, mais préfère poursuivre dans le secret son exaltation idéaliste. Il finit par découvrir, en les entendant derrière une cloison, les ébats charnels de Maria et de son mari. Blessé et jaloux, il perd du coup ses illusions sur l'amour pur. Quand Maria quitte Trouville, le jeune homme entretient toutefois sa passion idéalisée et, plus tard, revient sur les lieux où il l'a aperçue pour la toute première fois.

HerodiasByGustave FlaubertHerodias (c. 15 BC -- after 39 AD) was a princess of the Herodian Dynasty of Judaea during the time of the Roman Empire."Hérodias" is the retelling of the beheading of John the Baptist. It starts slightly before the arrival of the Syrian governor, Vitellius. Herodias holds a huge birthday celebration for her second husband, Herod Antipas. Unknown to him, she has concocted a plan to behead John. According to Flaubert, this plan entails making her husband fall in love with her daughter, Salomé, leading to him promising her whatever she wants. Salomé, obviously in line with the instructions of her mother, will ask for John's head. Everything goes as planned. John has been repeatedly insulting the royals, so the king does not think long before granting Salomé's wish. The crowd gathered for the party waits anxiously while the executioner, Mannaeus, kills John. The story ends with some of John's disciples awaiting the Messiah.

Une invitation au bal du marquis d'Andervilliers lui redonne la joie de vivre. Lorsque Emma attend un enfant, son mari décide de quitter la ville de Tostes et de s'installer à Yonville. Emma fait la connaissance des personnalités locales: le pharmacien progressiste et athée M. Homais; le curé Bournisien; Léon Dupuis, clerc du notaire Guillaumin; le libertin Rodolphe Boulanger, propriétaire du château de la Huchette. Emma est déçue par la naissance de la petite Berthe, puisqu'elle aurait préféré mettre au monde un garçon. Elle s'enlise dans l'ennui, et perd tout espoir d'une vie meilleure. Les amants d'Emma ont refusé de lui prêter de l'argent. Emma se suicide par désespoir. Charles meurt de chagrin. À la mort de ses parents, Berthe est confiée à une tante, pauvre, et qui l'envoie travailler dans une filature de coton pour subsister financièrement.
