HerodiasByGustave FlaubertHerodias (c. 15 BC -- after 39 AD) was a princess of the Herodian Dynasty of Judaea during the time of the Roman Empire."Hérodias" is the retelling of the beheading of John the Baptist. It starts slightly before the arrival of the Syrian governor, Vitellius. Herodias holds a huge birthday celebration for her second husband, Herod Antipas. Unknown to him, she has concocted a plan to behead John. According to Flaubert, this plan entails making her husband fall in love with her daughter, Salomé, leading to him promising her whatever she wants. Salomé, obviously in line with the instructions of her mother, will ask for John's head. Everything goes as planned. John has been repeatedly insulting the royals, so the king does not think long before granting Salomé's wish. The crowd gathered for the party waits anxiously while the executioner, Mannaeus, kills John. The story ends with some of John's disciples awaiting the Messiah.

Bouvard and Pécuchet by Gustave Flaubert Nowhere do Flaubert's explorations of the relation of signs to the objects they signify reach a more thorough study than in this work. Bouvard and Pécuchet systematically confuse signs and symbols with reality, an assumption that causes them much suffering, as it does for Emma Bovary and Frédéric Moreau. Yet here, due to the explicit focus on books and knowledge, Flaubert's ideas reach a climax. Consequently, the book is widely read as a precursor to modern theories... We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Salammbo is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert, published in 1862. The story is set in ancient Carthage during the third century BC, and follows the beautiful priestess Salammbo as she becomes embroiled in a dangerous political and religious conflict.Salammbo is the daughter of Hamilcar, a powerful Carthaginian general. She is chosen to be the high priestess of the goddess Tanit, and her beauty and grace make her a beloved figure in the city. However, Carthage is on the brink of war with Rome, and Salammbo finds herself caught between the conflicting interests of her father, the Carthaginian senate, and the mercenaries who are hired to fight for Carthage. As the conflict intensifies, Salammbo becomes entangled in a web of intrigue and betrayal. She falls in love with a young mercenary named Matho, but their relationship is threatened by the machinations of Hamilcar and the Carthaginian senate. Meanwhile, the mercenaries, led by the ruthless Spendius, plot to overthrow Carthage and seize its wealth for themselves.Salammbo is a vivid and evocative portrayal of ancient Carthage, with Flaubert's meticulous attention to detail bringing the city to life.
