One of the great romances of the Middle Ages, Tristan, written in the early thirteenth century, is based on a medieval love story of grand passion and deceit. By slaying a dragon, the young prince Tristan wins the beautiful Isolde's hand in marriage for his uncle, King Mark. On their journey back to Mark's court, however, the pair mistakenly drink a love-potion intended for the king and his young bride, and are instantly possessed with an all-consuming love for each another - a love they are compelled to conceal by a series of subterfuges that culminates in tragedy. Von Strassburg's work is acknowledged as the greatest rendering of this legend of medieval lovers, and went on to influence generations of writers and artists and inspire Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde.

Tristan ist das wichtigste Werk des mittelalterlichen Dichters Gottfried von Straßburg. Gottfrieds Tristan wird zu den schönsten Dichtungen des 13. Jahrhunderts gezählt. An Klarheit und Durchsichtigkeit der Darstellung, an zauberischem Reiz leichten Gedankenflusses, an plastischer Geschlossenheit und konsequenter Durchführung der Gestalten, an melodischem Wohllaut der Sprache und des Reims sucht Gottfrieds Dichtung in der ganzen mittelhochdeutschen höfischen Epik ihresgleichen. Der um 1210 entstandene und Fragment gebliebene Versroman ist eine Bearbeitung des "Tristan und Isolde"-Stoffes. Tristan, der Sohn Riwalins von Parmenien und Blanscheflurs, der Schwester Markes von Cornwall, wird nach dem frühen Tod seiner Eltern vom treuen Marschall seines Vaters, Rual li Foitenant, erzogen und kommt nach mannigfachen Abenteuern zu seinem Onkel, König Marke von Cornwall. Nachdem Tristan seinem Onkel gegen Morold geholfen hat und er Morold im Zweikampf besiegte und tötete, muss Tristan nach Irland reisen, da er sich von Morolds vergiftetem Schwert eine tödliche Verwundung zugezogen hat. Nur die Königin Isolde von Irland verfügt über die Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten, diese Wunde zu heilen, da auch sie es war, die das Schwert ihres Bruders Morold mit dem Gift tränkte. Gottfried von Straßburg (ca um 1215) war einer der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Dichter des Mittelalters. Er lebte Ende des 12. und Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts und war Zeitgenosse von Hartmann von Aue, Wolfram von Eschenbach und Walther von der Vogelweide.
