A personal story how GOD helped me to quit smoking.

In seiner Doppelausstellung im Sprengel Museum und im Landesmuseum Hannover stellt Glenn Brown eine retrospektive Auswahl eigener Werke seit 1995 zusammen und konfrontiert sie mit einer Auswahl von Lieblingsbildern aus den Sammlungen beider Häuser. Die Hängung ist dabei nicht chronologisch nach Schulen organisiert, sondern spürt inhaltlichen Parallelen nach: die vergängliche Form, der bloßgestellte Körper, das Menschenbild, charakterisiert durch Pinselführung, Oberfläche und Materialität. Auf diese Weise bringt Brown Kontinuitäten und Kontraste aus 500 Jahren Malereigeschichte in einen zeitgemäßen Dialog, der bereits in seinen eigenen Gemälden angelegt ist: Hier sind Geschichte, Themen und Stile der europäischen Bilderwelt immer präsent, wenn er Motive alter Meister oder von Science-Fiction-Illustratoren zitiert, sie neu zusammensetzt und in augentäuschender Feinmalerei daraus eigene Welten schafft. Das Buch verdichtet das Konzept der Ausstellung in pointierten Gegenüberstellungen der Bilder und gibt so im Dialog mit der Geschichte aus dem Blick von heute den altmeisterlichen Werken ihre Unmittelbarkeit und Widerspenstigkeit zurück.
