Where did these history plays come from? On the surface at least, the idea for Socrates came from hearing a dramatic reading of Plato's dialogue The Symposium in 2001...The idea was reinforced a year later when I had the good fortune to visit Greece and experience for myself Plato's country: The air and sunlight, the ruins of the Pythian Apollo oracle at Delphi, the Theatre of Dionysus below the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and much more... The idea for Cervantes came during a soiree at the home of two dear friends in Marin. The writing of it began in 2003. The early drafts slowly matured into the draft published here. In 2004 Cervantes was cast and performed. But why? Why two history plays and not, say, two biographies? Biographies could be done, but I am not a biographer. "It began one afternoon nearly 30 years ago in the basement of the Rare Books Library at Tuskeegee University. Looking through a microfilm roller at the papers of Jean Toomer, an African-American novelist of the 1920's Harlem Renaissance, I scrolled pass the first page of a handwritten copy of Georg I. Gurdjieff's ballet Struggle of the Magicians on the roller. Not even typewritten. I scrolled back to it." So begins the author's notes to the first of a four-volume collection of plays documenting the evolution of a self-taught amateur playwright from a know-nothing to a homespun veteran of 22 productions, mostly Shakespeare, with six non-Shakespeare productions flowing from his own pen. For all that evolution, the author sees he's still a know-nothing, just one with a little more experience. So why inflict one more volume of printed anything, let alone four, on a print-weary audience of readers? Go make a movie. The reason is simple: Starting with this volume, "Collected Plays" documents a 30-year journey of self-revelation and discovery by the author: "Things as they are, myself as I am". Each play has been crafted to communicate this revelation to readers. The first two volumes are plays written with sanity checks removed from the virtual realities they construct, being full throttle exercises in magic realism. The third volume seems more grounded, but isn't really, being two history plays focusing on turning-point events in the lives of Cervantes and Socrates. During the reigns of Ramses II and his successors, from about 1300 BC to 1150 BC, a social class of well-educated secular royal scribes and temple craftsmen appeared in Ancient Egypt rivaling the traditional priesthood in cultural influence, if not power. In their hands a new genre of literature took shape: Secular love poetry depicting in hieratic script real flesh-and-blood men and women, expressing real emotions and speaking to one another with real, often erotic and tender human feelings for the first time. Unfortunately, this state of affairs was to last only as long as the reigns of Ramses II and his immediate successors. Roughly 100 years.The translations edited and presented in this third edition represent the collective effort of at least three generations of Egyptologists, dating back to the late 19th century and reaching a highpoint in the translations of Miriam Lichtheim in the 1970s and the recent efforts of Bernard Mathieu and others.

Out of Africa The Ancient Egyptian Connection is a book about two journeys: the soul's journey from spiritual sleep to awakening and its journey within this awakening. The first of these has been well-documented, the latter equally significant, is rarely mentioned -- perhaps because most of us have little or no experience with it. It eludes ordinary comprehension. In this two-volume work, Dr. Moore (PhD, Princeton 1978) attempts to reconstruct the nature of those journeys from the fragmentary evidence left behind in two sources -- the so-called Book of the Amduat inside the tombs of Thutmosis III and Ramses VI and the less well-known Book of the Two Ways duplicated inside the lids of thousands of coffins of Ancient Egyptian nobles. Standing on the shoulders of two giants of Egyptology -- Alexandre Piankoff and Richard Faulkner-- Dr. Moore takes the unprecendented and daring step of mapping onto the sacred texts themselves the schema of the cartoon-like stick figures depicted on the tomb walls. Enigmatic until now, the text and images suddenly become transparent, voices can be heard. And then as if this were not radical surgery enough, the author identifies and decodes the voices. Nothing so controversial in its implications has been done before.
