120,95 kr. Mrs. Prentiss was fortunate in the place of her birth. She first saw the light at Portland, Maine. Maine was then a district of Massachusetts, and Portland was its chief town and seaport, distinguished for beauty of situation, enterprise, intelligence, social refinement and all the best qualities of New England character. Not a few of the early settlers had come from Cape Cod and other parts of the old Bay State, and the blood of the Pilgrim Fathers ran in their veins. Among its leading citizens at that time were such men as Stephen Longfellow, Simon Greenleaf, Prentiss Mellen, Samuel Fessenden, Ichabod Nichols, Edward Payson, and Asa Cummings; men eminent for private and public virtue, and some of whom were destined to become still more widely known, by their own growing influence, or by the genius of their children.

- A Tract For The Times Touching Civil Reform (1877)
223,95 - 224,95 kr. ""Our National Bane Or The Dry Rot In American Politics: A Tract For The Times Touching Civil Reform"" is a book written by George Lewis Prentiss in 1877. The book discusses the corruption and decay present in American politics at the time and argues for the need for civil reform. Prentiss argues that the country's political system is plagued by a ""dry rot"" that is eating away at its foundations, and that this rot is caused by a lack of moral integrity among politicians and a failure to uphold the principles of democracy. He also suggests various reforms that could be implemented to address these issues, including the establishment of an independent civil service and the adoption of more transparent and accountable practices. Overall, ""Our National Bane"" is a passionate call to action for those who care about the future of American democracy and the role that politics plays in shaping it.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
