The story is set in France during the late 16th century and follows the adventures of a young Huguenot named Philip Fletcher. The Huguenots were French Protestants who were persecuted by the Catholic Church and the French monarchy during this time.The novel begins with Philip's father being killed by Catholic soldiers, which sets him on a path of revenge against those who have wronged him and his family. Along the way, he meets other Huguenots who are fighting for their freedom and joins them in their struggle against the Catholic authorities.The story takes place during the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, in which thousands of Huguenots were killed by Catholic mobs in Paris. Philip and his companions must fight for their lives and escape the city before they too are caught up in the violence.Henty's novel is a thrilling adventure story that also provides a detailed account of the Huguenot Wars and the religious and political tensions that led to them. George Alfred Henty (8 December 1832 - 16 November 1902) was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent. He is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century. His works include The Dragon & The Raven (1886), For The Temple (1888), Under Drake's Flag (1883) and In Freedom's Cause (1885). G. A. Henty was born in Trumpington, near Cambridge. He was a sickly child who had to spend long periods in bed. During his frequent illnesses he became an avid reader and developed a wide range of interests which he carried into adulthood. He attended Westminster School, London, and later Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a keen sportsman.
