... Avoir vu les villes d'Italie, d'Allemagne et des autres royaumes, ce n'est rien, dit un Allemand contemporain de Louis XIII; ce qui frappe, c'est quand un homme peut dire qu'il a été à Paris. S'il en croyait les guides, l'étranger descendait A la Croix de fer, rue Saint-Martin. Il était là au centre de la ville, à deux pas de la Cité, non loin du Marais, qui tondait à devenir le quartier à la mode. Une fois le marché fait avec l'hôtelier pour le gîte, le couvert, les laquais, les porteurs et les chevaux, le voyageur pouvait descendre dans la rue et se diriger vers la Seine. Il était saisi, immédiatement, parle tourbillon d'une foule affairée, se pressant dans des rues étroites, sur un pavé glissant, sans autre abri que les bornes servant de marchepied aux cavaliers. Le jour et l'air, interceptés par la hauteur des maisons, par les toits en pignons, par les étages surplombant, par la multitude et la diversité des enseignes, étaient assombris encore et empuantis par les horribles exhalaisons de la boue parisienne: pour peu qu'on eût le nez délicat, il fallait se munir d'un bouquet ou d'un flacon d'odeur...
