De toute la Bataille des frontières la partie restée la plus obscure jusqu'ici est la lutte engagée du 20 au 30 août dans la région des Ardennes et de la Meuse du Luxembourg belge. Sur un front d'au moins cent kilomètres, trois armées allemandes, trois armées françaises, se livrèrent des combats obscurs, extrêmement meurtriers, qui eurent les plus graves conséquences sur le sort de la guerre elle-même. A la suite des premiers engagements, les armées françaises furent refoulées; la France fut envahie; mais elle trouva, dans ces mêmes combats, les gages de sa prochaine victoire, - la victoire de la Marne. Ce premier acte est l'acte des préparations. Les armées du kronprinz, du duc de Wurtemberg et du général von Hausen en sortirent victorieuses, mais si fortement secouées qu'elles ne purent accomplir la mission dont elles étaient chargées: prendre ou bloquer Toul et Verdun, couper les communications de nos armées de l'Est, asséner enfin à l'armée de Joffre le coup décisif dans les plaines de la Champagne ou sur les bords de la Seine. 1 100 000 hommes peut-être furent engagés dans ce vaste événement militaire comparable aux batailles de Mandchourie. Pendant la seule journée du 22 août, douze combats, qui mirent aux prises chacun de 60 à 100 000 hommes, furent livrés simultanément. Une terrible épreuve donna, dès le début, aux deux parties, le sentiment de ce que seraient ces rencontres de peuples en armes...
