313,95 kr. Why the History of English Law is Not Written is a thought-provoking lecture by Frederic William Maitland, one of the most prominent legal historians of the late 19th century. In this lecture, Maitland questions why there has been so little attention paid to the history of English law, despite its importance for understanding the legal system not only of England but also of the United States and other common-law countries. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in legal history or the history of English common law. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. 113,95 kr. Thomas Hobbes ( 5 April 1588 - 4 December 1679), in some older texts Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury, was an English philosopher who is considered one of the founders of modern political philosophy.Hobbes is best known for his 1651 book Leviathan, which established the social contract theory that has served as the foundation for most later Western political philosophy. In addition to political philosophy, Hobbes also contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, ethics, and general philosophy. Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign, Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought: the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order (which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state); the view that all legitimate political power must be "representative" and based on the consent of the people; and a liberal interpretation of law which leaves people free to do whatever the law does not explicitly forbid. His understanding of humans as being matter and motion, obeying the same physical laws as other matter and motion, remains influential; and his account of human nature as self-interested cooperation, and of political communities as being based upon a "social contract" remains one of the major topics of political philosophy. Frederic William Maitland, FBA (28 May 1850 - 19 December 1906) was an English historian and lawyer who is generally regarded as the modern father of English legal history.Maitland was born at 53 Guilford Street, London, the only son of John Gorham Maitland (1818-1863) and of Emma, daughter of John Frederic Daniell. His grandfather was Samuel Roffey Maitland (1792-1866). He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, being bracketed at the head of the moral sciences tripos of 1872, and winning the Whewell scholarship for international law.He was a Cambridge Apostle and President of the Cambridge Union.......... Sir Leslie Stephen KCB (28 November 1832 - 22 February 1904) was an English author, critic, historian, biographer, and mountaineer, and father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.Stephen was born at Kensington Gore in London, and son of Sir James Stephen and Lady Jane Catherine (née Venn) Stephen. His father was Colonial Undersecretary of State and a noted abolitionist. He was the fourth of five children, his siblings including James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-1894) and Caroline Emilia Stephen (1834-1909). His family had belonged to the Clapham Sect, the early 19th century group of mainly evangelical Christian social reformers. At his father's house he saw a good deal of the Macaulays, James Spedding, Sir Henry Taylor and Nassau Senior. After studying at Eton College, King's College London and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. (20th wrangler) in 1854 and M.A. in 1857, Stephen remained for several years a fellow and tutor of his college. He recounted some of his experiences in a chapter in his Life of Fawcett as well as in some less formal Sketches from Cambridge: By a Don (1865). These sketches were reprinted from the Pall Mall Gazette, to the proprietor of which, George Murray Smith, he had been introduced by his brother. MARRIAGE: The family connections included that of William Makepeace Thackeray. His brother, Fitzjames had been a friend of Thackeray's and assisted in the disposition of his estate when he died in 1863. His sister Caroline met Thackeray's daughters, Anny (1837-1919) and Minny (Harriet Marian Thackeray 1840-1875) when they were mutual guests of Julia Margaret Cameron (of whom, see later)....

- An Inaugural Lecture (1888)
317,95 kr. ""Why The History Of English Law Is Not Written: An Inaugural Lecture (1888)"" is a lecture given by Frederic William Maitland, a prominent legal historian, in which he discusses the reasons why a comprehensive history of English law has not yet been written. Maitland argues that the complexity and evolution of English law, as well as the lack of available sources and the biases of previous historians, have made it difficult to create a definitive account of its development. He also explores the ways in which legal history intersects with social, political, and cultural history, and how a deeper understanding of these connections can enrich our understanding of the law. This book provides valuable insights into the challenges of studying legal history and offers a compelling argument for the importance of continued research in this field. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

282,95 kr. The Charters Of The Borough Of Cambridge (1901) is a historical book written by Frederic William Maitland. The book is a comprehensive account of the charters that were granted to the borough of Cambridge over the centuries. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the legal and political implications of these charters, and explores the impact they had on the development of the town. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of the charters. The author begins by providing a brief history of the town, and then goes on to discuss the various charters that were granted to the borough by different monarchs. He also examines the legal and political implications of these charters, and explores how they affected the governance of the town. One of the key themes of the book is the struggle for power between the town and the university. The author explores the tensions that existed between these two institutions, and how they were reflected in the charters that were granted to the borough. He also discusses the role that the town played in the wider political and social context of England during this period.Overall, The Charters Of The Borough Of Cambridge (1901) is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Cambridge or the development of English law and governance. The book is well-researched and provides a detailed and nuanced account of the charters that shaped the town's history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
