218,95 kr. War is waged by men; not by beasts, or by gods. It is a peculiarly human activity. To call it a crime against mankind is to miss at least half its significance; it is also the punishment of a crime. That raises a moral question, the kind of problem with which the present age is disinclined to deal. Perhaps some future attempt to provide a solution for it may prove to be even more astonishing than the last. While this book is a record of experience on the Somme and Ancre fronts, with an interval behind the lines, during the latter half of the year 1916; and the events described in it actually happened; the characters are fictitious. It is true that in recording the conversations, the men seemed at times to hear the voices of ghosts. Their judgments were necessarily partial and prejudiced; but prejudices and partialities provide most of the driving power of life.

- A Narrative Poem (1907)
185,95 kr. The Vigil of Brunhild is a narrative poem written by Frederic Manning and published in 1907. The poem tells the story of Brunhild, a legendary figure from Germanic mythology who is known for her strength and bravery. In the poem, Brunhild is depicted as a powerful and independent woman who is fiercely loyal to her people and her beliefs. The story begins with Brunhild's decision to enter a vigil, a period of prayer and fasting, in order to gain strength and clarity for an upcoming battle. As she spends the night in contemplation, she reflects on her past and her role as a leader. She also confronts her fears and doubts, and ultimately emerges from the vigil with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Throughout the poem, Manning employs vivid imagery and powerful language to bring Brunhild's story to life. He also draws on themes of honor, duty, and sacrifice, exploring the complex nature of heroism and the challenges that come with leadership. Overall, The Vigil of Brunhild is a compelling and thought-provoking work that offers a unique perspective on an iconic figure from mythology. It is a must-read for anyone interested in poetry, mythology, or the human experience. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 264,95 kr. ¿Frederic Manning is generally acknowledged as the finest novelist of the Western Front. Born in Australia, novelist and poet Frederic Manning moved to England in his youth and was an off-and-on presence there for much of his life. He enlisted during 1915 into the Shropshire Light Infantry, and served in France during 1916 as 'Private 19022'. The Shropshires saw heavy fighting on the Somme, and Manning's four months there provided the background to Her Privates We. An undisputed classic of war writing and a lasting tribute to all who participated in the war to end all wars.

- Somme And Ancre, 1916
118,95 kr. With an Introduction by Niall Ferguson'Kill the buggers! Kill the bloody fucking swine! Kill them!'Bourne is a private fighting on the front. He is under pressure to accept a commission and become an officer, but he prefers to be among the ranks, drawn into the universal struggle for survival in a world gone mad.Manning's startling work is unlike any other First World War novel in its portrayal of the lives of ordinary British soldiers: the trauma of the Somme; the moments of bloodlust; the camaraderie, rivalry, alcohol and boredom. Considered obscene for its language and previously published in censored form as Her Privates We, The Middle Parts of Fortune appears here in its raw, unexpurgated version.
