Non, ça ne commence même pas par une séparation. Ça commence le jour d'après, et bien sûr, ça continue le lendemain avec le jour suivant, et encore le surlendemain, et ainsi de suite... Et c'est comme ça tous les jours, le bordel. Car elle est partie, cette conne. Pourquoi, pour qui ? Mystère. C'était pourtant si joli, l'amour. Bref... La vie de Frédéric est remplie de beaucoup de choses importantes, mais vides. Il est conseiller régional, et fait de son mieux; oui, il est gentil, et comme souvent le sont les gens gentils, même s'il a tout pour être heureux, il est un peu triste en vérité. Il refait le monde, le soir, en écoutant du jazz, et sirotant sans fin des fonds de whisky, avec son mystérieux meilleur ami. Lors de l'inauguration d'un foyer pour adultes handicapés, il tombe sur elle, Emilie, et amoureux. Emilie est une femme ingénue en situation de handicap, dont le suicide est la principale préoccupation, et, c'est drôle, mais quand elle marche, elle ne fait aucun bruit sur le sol, et semble ne rien peser. Parce que Frédéric s'interroge un peu trop sur l'intérêt de la construction d'un grand pôle "Recherche et Développement", au nord de Rennes, un tueur est engagé pour l'éliminer. Et son meilleur ami a disparu... C'est là que la magie de la vie et de l'amour débute son tour, démarre son spectacle. En toile de fond, le roman traite du pouvoir, bien réel, de l'imagination et de l'amour.
