Francesco Guicciardini (1483-1540) var en italiensk statsmand, historiker og politisk teoretiker, der var personlig ven med Niccolò Machiavelli. I 1500-tallets krigshærgede Italien indtog han høje poster i Kirkestaten, hvor han demonstrerede sine rige politiske og diplomatiske evner. I Guicciardinis som i Machiavellis verden er politik = magtkamp, og i denne kamp spiller etik, moral, sandhed o. lign. enten en instrumentel rolle eller slet ingen. Det er ikke et teoretisk standpunkt, men en daglig erfaring (dengang og nu). Guicciardini forstår derfor al politisk og social handling som baseret på egeninteressen (el particulare). Men hvor Machiavelli begrænser sig til fyrstens eller magthaverens virkefelt, inddrager Guicciardini en langt bredere problemkreds, således at hvad der gælder for den politiske sfære også gøres til norm for den private. Råd og refleksioner er et koncentrat af et intenst og begivenhedsrigt livs tanker og erfaringer og indeholder en lang række usminkede og skarpsindige anvisninger for den praktiske livsførelse, der fungerer lige så godt i dag som for 500 år siden og stadig kan gøre os klogere på menneskelivet.
