108,95 kr. Fergusson Wright Hume, known as Fergus Hume (8 July 1859 - 12 July 1932) was a prolific English novelist. Finding that the novels of Émile Gaboriau were then very popular in Melbourne, he obtained and read a set of them and determined to write a novel of a similar kind. The result was the self-published novel The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886), which became a great success. Hume based his descriptions of poor urban life on his knowledge of Little Bourke Street. He sold the English and United States rights to the novel for 50 pounds, and thus derived little benefit from its success. It eventually became the best selling mystery novel of the Victorian era, author John Sutherland terming it the "most sensationally popular crime and detective novel of the century".This novel inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the character Sherlock Holmes. Doyle remarked, "Hansom Cab was a slight tale, mostly sold by 'puffing'." After the success of his first novel and the publication of another, Professor Brankel's Secret (c.1886), Hume returned to England in 1888.He resided in London for few years and then he moved to the Essex countryside where he lived in Thundersley for 30 years, eventually producing more than 100 novels and short stories. He continued to be anxious for success as a dramatist, and at one time Henry Irving was favourably considering one of his plays, but he died before it could be produced.

267,95 kr. Hagar Of The Pawnshop is a novel written by Fergus Hume. The story revolves around a young woman named Hagar, who works in a pawnshop in London. Hagar is beautiful and intelligent, but she is also poor and has had a difficult life. She dreams of a better life, but her circumstances seem to hold her back. One day, Hagar meets a wealthy man named Mark Ashburn, who is immediately drawn to her. Mark is married, but he is unhappy in his marriage and sees Hagar as a way out. He offers to take her away from the pawnshop and give her a better life, but Hagar is hesitant to accept his offer. As Hagar and Mark's relationship develops, Hagar begins to realize that Mark is not the man she thought he was. He is controlling and manipulative, and she begins to feel trapped in their relationship. Hagar must decide whether to stay with Mark and continue living a life of luxury, or to leave him and return to her old life. Hagar Of The Pawnshop is a compelling story about love, power, and the struggle for independence. It explores the complex relationships between men and women, and the ways in which societal expectations can limit a person's choices. Hume's vivid descriptions of London in the late 19th century bring the story to life, and his nuanced characters make the novel a timeless classic.Hagar hesitated. The article, notwithstanding its workmanship, its age, and its historical associations, was worth very little. Had its interest consisted of these merely, she would not have taken the key in pawn. But the row of mysterious figures decided her. Here was a secret, connected--as was probable from the remark of the old man--with a hidden treasure. Remembering her experience with the cryptogram of the Florentine Dante, Hagar determined to retain the key, and, if possible, to discover the secret. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
