Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was a noted American author and journalist. This release consists of one FBI main file on Hemingway with documents ranging from 1942 to 1974. The bulk of it concerns Hemingway's intelligence work on behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba between 1942 and 1944. The Handbook of Forensic Services provides guidance and procedures for safe and efficient methods of collecting, preserving, packaging, and shipping evidence and describes the forensic examinations performed by the FBI's Laboratory Division and Operational Technology Division. The successful investigation and prosecution of crimes require, in most cases, the collection, preservation, and forensic analysis of evidence. Forensic analysis of evidence is often crucial to determinations of guilt or innocence. The FBI has one of the largest and most comprehensive forensic laboratories in the world, and the FBI Laboratory is accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board. The forensic services of the FBI Laboratory Division and the Operational Technology Division are available to the following: FBI field offices and legal attachés, U.S. attorneys, military tribunals, and other federal agencies for civil and criminal matters, State, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies in the United States and territorial possessions for criminal matters. All forensic services, including expert witness testimonies, are rendered free of cost; however, the following limitations apply: No examination will be conducted on evidence that has been previously subjected to the same type of examination. Exceptions may be granted when there are reasons for a reexamination. These reasons should be explained in separate letters from the director of the laboratory that conducted the original examination, the prosecuting attorney, and the investigating agency. No request for an examination will be accepted from laboratories having the capability of conducting the examination. Exceptions may be granted upon approval of the FBI Laboratory Director or a designee. No testimony will be furnished if testimony on the same subject and in the same case is provided for the prosecution by another expert. No request for an examination will be accepted from a nonfederal law enforcement agency in civil matters. In addition, when submitting evidence to the FBI Laboratory, contributors acknowledge the following: FBI examiners will choose appropriate technical processes to address the contributor's request for examination. Depending on the caseload of the Laboratory and the needs of the contributor, evidence examinations may be subcontracted. An FBI Laboratory Report of Examination may contain the opinions and/or interpretations of the examiner(s) who issued the report.

There is no substitute for looking at primary documents and real-time work product to understand how people's minds were actually working in history. In October 2020 the FBI declassified a 94-page spreadsheet that it used to track its analysts efforts to corroborate the so-called Steele dossier of allegations against then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump. The spreadsheet was referenced by FBI Inspector General Horowitz in a report that sharply criticized the FBI for its handling of the Dossier. Reporting on the released spreadsheet noted that it relied heavily on media reporting, some of which in turn relied on leaks from ... the Steele dossier. Commentators also observed that the corroboration analysis relied heavily on Steele's primary subsource, Igor Danchenko. The United States of America, through its departments and agencies, regulates the activities of foreign individuals and entities in and affecting the United States in order to prevent, disclose, and counteract improper foreign influence on U.S. elections and on the U.S. political system. U.S. law bans foreign nationals from making certain expenditures or financial disbursements for the purpose of influencing federal elections. U.S. law also bars agents of any foreign entity from engaging in political activities within the United States without first registering with the Attorney General. And U.S. law requires certain foreign nationals seeking entry to the United States to obtain a visa by providing truthful and accurate information to the government. Various federal agencies, including the Federal Election Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of State, are charged with enforcing these laws.

In response to the Virginia Tech incident on April 16, 2007, former cabinet Secretaries Michael Leavitt and Margaret Spellings, and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales submitted the Report to the President on Issues Raised by the Virginia Tech Tragedy dated June 13, 2007.
