"Caper-Sauce" is a pleasing and satirical brief tale written by Fanny Fern, the pen call of nineteenth-century American writer Sara Payson Willis Parton. The narrative humorously critiques societal norms and gender roles ordinary in Victorian America. The story revolves around the character Mrs. Hopestill Brown, a seemingly traditional woman who adheres to the expectancies placed upon women in her society. However, the plot takes a surprising flip when Mrs. Brown comes to a decision to strive a new condiment, "caper-sauce," which serves as a metaphor for breaking loose from societal constraints and embracing non-public goals. As Mrs. Brown experiments with the unconventional flavor of caper-sauce, she undergoes a change, tough the traditional expectancies of her role as a dutiful spouse. Fanny Fern uses wit and satire to focus on the limitations imposed on ladies and advocates for individuality and self-expression. "Caper-Sauce" is a fascinating and humorous exploration of societal norms and the capacity for personal boom and liberation. Fanny Fern's narrative fashion and social statement contribute to her legacy as a pioneering determine in American literature, especially for her advocacy of women's rights and her capacity to address serious troubles via humor and satire.

Six months since, I was in a deplorable state of ignorance as to the most felicitous style of Preface; at this lapse of time, I find myself not a whit the wiser. You will permit me, therefore, in pressing again your friendly hands, simply to say, that I hope my second offering of "Fern Leaves" will be more worthy of your acceptance, than the first.

Fanny Fern dominated the New York literary scene in the 1850s, garnering both esteem and, occasionally, derision for her witty and acerbic newspaper columns and literary criticism; her semi-autobiographical novel Ruth Hall, which traces the rise of an intelligent and determined young woman from poverty to prestige through her pursuit of a writing career, was one of America's most significant early bestsellers. Fern's use of informal, vibrantly conversational prose and her abundant colloquialisms marked an important shift in the established literary conventions of nineteenth-century fiction and journalism. This compact edition collects some of Fern's most frequently taught journalism--much of which focuses on the changing roles of women in nineteenth-century America--along with excerpts from Ruth Hall. This volume is one of a number of editions that have been drawn from the pages of the acclaimed Broadview Anthology of American Literature. The series is designed to make selections from the anthology available in a format convenient for use in a wide variety of contexts; each edition features an introduction and exaplanatory footnotes, and is designed to meet the needs of today's students.

A word said, a line written, and we are happy; omitted, our hearts ache as if for a great misfortune. She is not in the garden; I have searched under every bush and tree. She is not asleep in the summer-house, or in the old barn. She is not feeding the speckled chickens, or gathering buttercups in the meadows. Her little dog Fidele is weary waiting for her, and her sweet-voiced canary has forgotten to sing. Has anybody seen my little Nelly? She had eyes blue as the summer heavens, hair like woven sunbeams, teeth like seed pearls, and a voice soft as the wind sighing through the river willows.

I am not disposed to pity Editors. On the whole, I think they have a very good time. That national sugar-plum for American boys, "Maybe, my son, you will be one day President," might be changed advantageously for "My son, you may live some day to be an Editor." As for the present President, if he can sleep o' nights, he can live through anything!

Excerpt from Folly as It Flies: Hit At I Wish every husband would copy into his memorandum book this sentence, from a recently published work: "Women must be constituted very differently from men. A word said, a line written, and we are happy; omitted, our hearts ache as if for a great misfortune. Men cannot feel it, or guess at it; if they did, the most careless of them would be slow to wound us so." The grave hides many a heart which has been stung to death, because one who might, after all, have loved it after a certain careless fashion, was deaf, dumb, and blind to the truth in the sentence we have just quoted, or if not, was at least restive and impatient with regard to it. "Here is number fifty-four, Timmins," said the matron of a charity-school to her factotum, as she led in a little girl about six years of age; "number fifty-four; you must put another cot in the long hall, and another plate in the eating-room. What is your name, child?" "Rose," replied the little one, vailing her soft, dark eyes under their curtaining lashes, and twisting the corner of a cotton shawl. "Rose!" repeated the matron, in a contemptuous aside, to Timmins; "I knew it would be sure to be something fanciful; beggars always go on stilts." "I am not a beggar," said the child, "I am mother's little Rose." "Mother's little Rose?" repeated the matron, again, in the same sneering tone; "well-who was mother?"

  • - A Domestic Tale of the Present Time

Ruth Hall: A Domestic Tale of the Present Time by Fanny Fern. Ruth Hall: A Domestic Tale of the Present Time is a roman à clef by Fanny Fern (pen name of Sara Payson Willis), a popular 19th-century newspaper writer. Following on her meteoric rise to fame as a columnist, she signed a contract in February 1854 to write a full-length novel. She finished Ruth Hall within a few months, and it was first published in November 1854. The autobiographical novel can be divided into three phases: Ruth's happy marriage, impoverished widowhood, and rise to fame and financial independence as a newspaper columnist. I present you with my first continuous story. I do not dignify it by the name of "A novel." I am aware that it is entirely at variance with all set rules for novel-writing. There is no intricate plot; there are no startling developments, no hair-breadth escapes. I have compressed into one volume what I might have expanded into two or three. I have avoided long introductions and descriptions, and have entered unceremoniously and unannounced, into people's houses, without stopping to ring the bell. Whether you will fancy this primitive mode of calling, whether you will like the company to which it introduces you, or-whether you will like the book at all, I cannot tell. Still, I cherish the hope that, somewhere in the length and breadth of the land, it may fan into a flame, in some tried heart, the fading embers of hope, well-nigh extinguished by wintry fortune and summer friends.
