"Mysticism is the art of union with Reality. The mystic is a person who has attained that union in greater or less degree; or who aims at and believes in such attainment." So writes Evelyn Underhill, author of Practical Mysticism. In this little book, she explains precisely what that means and how we can put it to use in everyday life.In surprisingly timeless terms but under the guise of "Christian Mysticism," Underhill describes in 1914 what could rightly be called "secular mindfulness" today. She doesn't use much Christian terminology, instead preferring words that may be considered "new age," which allows readers to explore the mystical aspects of their own worldview without betraying their deeply held beliefs.Practical Mysticism is not a guidebook for mystical practice, although it does provide some tips along the way. What it does give is an introduction for the sufficiently motivated; those who see (or want to see) the world in a different way.

Mysticism And The Doctrine Of Atonement is a book written by Evelyn Underhill, a prominent British writer and philosopher known for her works on mysticism and spirituality. Underhill examines the mystical experiences of various Christian mystics, including St. John of the Cross, Julian of Norwich, and Meister Eckhart, and shows how their experiences relate to the doctrine of atonement. She argues that the mystical experience of union with God is the ultimate goal of the atonement, and that the doctrine is a way of understanding and expressing this experience.Throughout the book, Underhill provides a detailed analysis of the key concepts of atonement and mysticism, and shows how they are interconnected. She also explores the historical development of the doctrine of atonement, and its various interpretations throughout Christian history.Mysticism And The Doctrine Of Atonement is a thought-provoking and insightful book that will appeal to anyone interested in the relationship between mysticism and Christian theology. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN CALLED "The Life of the Spirit and the Life of To-day" in order to emphasize as much as possible the practical, here-and-now nature of its subject; and specially to combat the idea that the spiritual life-or the mystic life, as its more intense manifestations are sometimes called-is to be regarded as primarily a matter of history. It is not. It is a matter of biology. Though we cannot disregard history in our study of it, that history will only be valuable to us in so far as we keep tight hold on its direct connection with the present, its immediate bearing on our own lives: and this we shall do only in so far as we realize the unity of all the higher experiences of the race. In fact, were I called upon to choose a motto which should express the central notion of these chapters, that motto would be-"There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." This declaration I would interpret in the widest possible sense; as suggesting the underlying harmony and single inspiration of all man's various and apparently conflicting expressions of his instinct for fullness of life. For we shall not be able to make order, in any hopeful sense, of the tangle of material which is before us, until we have subdued it to this ruling thought: seen one transcendent Object towards which all our twisting pathways run, and one impulsion pressing us towards it. - Evelyn Underhill

A CHRISTIAN CLASSIC Practical Mysticism was first published in 1915 at the outbreak of World War I, at a time of "struggle and endurance, practical sacrifices, difficult and long continuous effort" when, she believed, practical mysticism was the activity needed most. In this book Underhill sets out her belief that spiritual life is part of human nature and as such is available to every human being. Following, Underhill defines the meaning of the phrase "Practical Mysticism: " "Therefore it is to a practical mysticism that the practical man is here invited: to a training of his latent faculties, a bracing and brightening of his languid consciousness, an emancipation from the fetters of appearance, a turning of his attention to new levels of the world. Thus he may become aware of the universe that the spiritual artist is always trying to disclose to the race. This amount of mystical perception-this 'ordinary contemplation, ' as the specialist call it, -is possible to all men: without it, they are not wholly alive. It is a natural human activity."
