188,95 kr. "The Framework of Home Rule" is an ancient nonfiction story book written by Erskine Childers. Childers' paintings, set against the context of the early twentieth century, whilst tensions between Ireland and Britain had been at their top, offers a thorough evaluation of the historical, accredited, and constitutional factors that make up the house rule argument. Childers gives a radical framework for knowledge the thoughts and realities of home rule, addressing key issues together with sovereignty, illustration, and Ireland's connection to the British Empire. Drawing on his very own experiences as a proponent of Irish independence, Childers offers insights into the political dynamics of the time and pushes for an amicable and democracy method to the Irish afflicted times. His careful studies and persuasive language make "The Framework of Home Rule" a crucial examine for anybody interested by Irish history and the struggle for self-dedication. Erskine Childers' book remains a seminal addition to the investigation of Irish politics, informing debates on themes of autonomy and governance in Ireland and elsewhere.

Erskine Childers er forfatter til flere bøger – blandt andet ”Riddle of the Sands” (da. ”Gådefuld sejlads), der fik stor indflydelse på Storbritanniens strategiske planlægning under både første og anden verdenskrig, og som efter sigende skulle have været Winston Churchills yndlingsbog.

73,95 kr. Do you like Stieg Larsson's 'Millennium', James Bond and dystopian dramas like 'The Man in the High Castle'? The 1903 spy thriller 'The Riddle of the Sands' has elements of all three - and then some. Ken Follett, author of 'The Pillars of the Earth', called 'The Riddle of the Sands' the "first modern thriller".It centres on a suspected plot by the German Empire to invade Britain. The plot proved to be almost prophetic, bearing in mind what was to follow in the First World War and the Second World War in the coming decades. Minor civil servant Carruthers and his friend, Davies are the men investigating the plot while on a yachting holiday in the Baltic Sea. They are drawn into an intricate story that includes secret treasure, a British traitor and a race against time to save Britain from the grip of the Kaiser. In 1979 'The Riddle of the Sands' was made into a spy thriller movie, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Simon MacCorkindale.Childers' technique of including a great deal of detail that could be verified was later used by authors including: John Buchan, who wrote 'The Thirty-Nine Steps'; 'James Bond' author Ian Fleming and John Le Carré.Erskine Childers (1870-1922) was an Anglo-Irish writer whose only true literary success came with 'The Riddle of the Sands'.Instead, he found infamy through his political activism. Having been a prospective Liberal parliamentary candidate, he left the party and took up the cause of Irish Republicanism. He smuggled guns into Ireland on his yacht, but was executed during the Irish Civil War. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, became the 4th president of Ireland.

143,95 kr.

When Charles Carruthers receives a letter from a university friend Arthur Davies asking if he wants to join him yachting in the Frisian Islands off the northern coast of Germany, he envisions a pleasant holiday from his job in the Foreign Office. Upon arriving, he finds that the 'yacht' is a converted life boat with no other crew other than the two of them, and that his friend's plan is to chart the channels and islands of the shore against the possibility of war with Germany. As the season advances and the weather worsens, it becomes clear that there is a deeper secret hidden in the off shore islands, and forces that will do anything to stop Carruthers and Davies from discovering the answer to The Riddle of the Sands!

88,95 - 228,95 kr. The Riddle of the Sands: A Record of Secret Service is a 1903 novel by Erskine Childers. The book, which enjoyed immense popularity in the years before World War I, is an early example of the espionage novel and was extremely in uential in the genre of spy ction. It has been made into feature-length lms for both cinema and television. The novel "owes a lot to the wonderful adventure novels of writers like Rider Haggard, that were a staple of Victorian Britain". It was a spy novel that established a formula that included a mass of veri able detail, which gave authenticity to the story - the same ploy that would be used so well by John Buchan, Ian Fleming, John le Carré and many others. Childers's biographer Andrew Boyle noted: "For the next ten years Childers's book remained the most powerful contribution of any English writer to the debate on Britain's alleged military unpreparedness". It was a notable in uence on John Buchan and Ken Follett, who described it as "an open-air adventure thriller about two young men who stumble upon a German armada preparing to invade England." Follett has also called it "the rst modern thriller." Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones listed The Riddle of the Sands as one of the ten classic spy novels, in its best spy novel list and Robert McCrum of The Observer included it in his list of the 100 greatest novels of all time. This classic title has been published by RADLEY BOOKS. 178,95 kr. Immensely popular in the years leading up to WWI, The Riddle of the Sands is a precisely drawn and geographically accurate adventure that, in addition to its captivating narrative, rich characters, and salty nautical details, was totally realistic, and prophetic in its exposure of British naval weaknesses. In fact, it was perceived as so accurate in its portrayal of the German naval threat and of England's vulnerability that it influenced the placement of multiple naval bases by Winston Churchill after its publication.
