Dabei beziehen sich die Ergebnisse überwiegend auf die späte Weimarer Republik, also die vierte Phase (1929-1933). Um die Rolle der Kneipe grundsätzlich besser verstehen zu können, wird zunächst auf die Kneipe als sozialen Raum eingegangen und anschließend die Rolle der Kneipe in der Arbeiterbewegung allgemein diskutiert. Diese Arbeit bezieht sich hauptsächlich auf die städtischen Sturmlokale der SA, deren schnelles Wachstum und die Funktion, welche die Lokale einnahmen. Die schnelle Ausbreitung der Sturmlokale wird in Zusammenhang mit der übergreifenden Strategie der NSDAP und deren ¿Legalitätskurs¿ gesetzt. Es wird außerdem betrachtet, welche soziale Rolle die Kneipen für Mitglieder der SA spielten. Des Weiteren wird ein kurzer Blick auf die kommunistischen Kneipen geworfen und eine Perspektive der SPD auf die Sturmlokale dargestellt.
