  • - A Review of Allan Meltzer's, a History of the Federal Reserve, Volume 2
    af Edward Nelson
    152,95 kr.

This paper reviews Allan H. Meltzer's "A History of the Federal Reserve, Volume 2." This two-book volume covers Federal Reserve policies from 1951 to 1986. The book represents an enormous achievement in synthesizing a great amount of archival information into a historical account grounded on economic analysis. At the same time, Meltzer's interpretation of specific eras is open to question. He does not appear to acknowledge adequately the degree to which 1950s monetary policy decisions had a solid analytical foundation. Furthermore, Meltzer's account of the shift from the 1970s inflation to the 1980s disinflation implausibly stresses a shift in policymakers' objective function. The crucial change over this period, both in the United States and other countries, is more likely to have been policymakers' improved grasp of the connections between monetary policy and inflation. The review also takes issue with Meltzer's account, in his book's epilogue, of the financial crisis from 2007 to 2009. In this epilogue, Meltzer understates the degree to which the Federal Reserve's reaction to the financial crisis was in line with the historical practice of the Federal Reserve and other central banks.

    278,95 kr.

Survey research is a powerful tool to help understand how and why individuals behave the way they do. Properly conducted, surveys can provide accurate insights into areas such as attitudes, opinions, motivations, and values, which serve as the drivers of individual behavior. This two-volume book is intended to introduce fundamentals of good survey research to students and practitioners of the survey process as well as end-users of survey information. This second volume focuses on carrying out a survey- including how to formulate survey questions, steps that researchers must use when conducting the survey, and impacts of rapidly changing technology on survey design and execution. The authors conclude with an important, but often neglected aspect of surveys-the presentation of results in different formats appropriate to different audiences.

"This two-volume biographical work provides a foundational introduction to Friedman's role in several major economic debates that took place over four decades in the US, from 1932 through the end of 1972. The debates considered include both those that were largely carried out in the economic-research literature and those that primarily proceeded in the media or in policy forums. Nelson writes from a unique vantage point, as he draws from his own expertise in monetary economics, and has immersed himself in Friedman's Hoover Institution archives, allowing him unparalleled familiarity with Friedman's publications. Further, Nelson differentiates Friedman's ideas from those of his University of Chicago colleagues-particularly with those of George Stigler. And beyond, Nelson is able to refine and explicate the existing Friedman literature. Nelson provides an analytical narrative of Friedman's career from 1932 to 1972 (with the narrative organized primarily in terms of key economic debates), together with an exposition of Friedman's economic framework. The first volume consists of Chapters 1 to 10, covering Friedman's formative and early years through 1951, and Chapters 11 to 15 (the whole of the second volume), consider U.S. economic debate, and Friedman's participation in it, in the years from 1951 to 1972-the first two decades of Friedman's "monetarist period.""--
