Es war Mitte März: Wir erwarteten sonniges Frühlingswetter, und doch regnete es an der Riviera. Unaufhörlich schlugen die Regentropfen gegen die Scheiben, heftig oder gelinde, doch ohne Ende, so daß auch die Tage endlos erschienen.Mißmuthig hatte man das Buch aus der Hand gelegt, die Unterhaltungen stockten. Bittere Klagen wurden über das Wetter laut. So Mancher war über die Alpen geeilt in der sicheren Erwartung, jenseits derselben den viel gepriesenen ewig blauen Himmel zu schauen; er hatte gehofft, den nahenden Vollmond in den Fluthen des Mittelmeeres sich spiegeln zu sehen, und nun wurde all' sein Sehnen und Trachten zu Wasser. ¿ Ich selbst, der ich oft schon den Frühling in Italien zugebracht hatte, faßte die Sachlage weit ruhiger auf. Wußte ich doch, daß auch in Italien die Regenzeit auf das Frühjahr fällt. Würden die Felder und Gärten Italiens nicht im Spätherbst und Frühling mit Regen getränkt, wie sollten sie Früchte tragen? Herrscht doch in den übrigen Jahreszeiten meist die größte Dürre. Was mich veranlaßt, trotz dieser scheinbar wenig günstigen Aussichten, doch immer wieder gerade im Frühjahr über die Alpen zu ziehen, das ist die Sehnsucht nach grünen Fluren und belaubten Bäumen, nach etwas Sonne und Wärme; die Zuversicht, am Mittelmeer doch mildere Witterung als im Norden zu finden, die Hoffnung, dort auch manchen sonnigen Tag, ja bei einigem Glück eine ganze Reihe solcher Tage zu erleben. Nach dem langen, kahlen, kalten nordischen Winter wirkt der Contrast am stärksten; man freut sich über das kärglichste Grün, nimmt dankbar jeden Sonnenstrahl entgegen, während schon Mancher zur Herbstzeit in der sonnverbrannten lombardischen Ebene sich nach den saftreichen Matten und dem üppigen Baumwuchs der Alpen zurücksehnte. Der Herbst pflegt auch in unseren Breiten schön zu sein, während unser März- und Aprilwetter mit Recht berüchtigt ist. So kam es auch in diesem Frühjahr; denn während Briefe und Zeitungen uns Kunde von Schnee und Kälte von jenseits der Alpen brachten, hatten wir uns am Mittelmeer alsbald des herrlichsten Sonnenscheins zu erfreuen.
