Book One After the government knocks on their door and takes down their mother, Katherine Mathews is forced to drag her younger sister behind her through the West Virginia mountains to keep them from being captured and 'altered' for social control. After being attacked by two of the altered, Kat and Izzy are taken in by Daren and his sister Kayla. To her surprise, Kat finds herself falling for her hero. The four have to fight to survive and encounter several obstacles before deciding enough is enough.

Katherine and Izzy continue their journey with Daren and Kayla, fighting the altered and waking the living. With the help of their families, they recruit enough people to start a war against the President, and take back their nation. Can the group survive the attacks the president continues to throw? And how are they going to awaken everyone when they can barely keep themselves alive? Old friends join their group and life gets even more complicated. As if fighting the altered wasn't hard enough, Katherine now finds herself with mixed feelings. Will she and Daren make it through the obstacles of their past and present? Will they even want to? Maybe life would have been easier if they never would have met.
