Tuvo la protección del duque de Alba y de la condesa de Arcos, en cuya casa vivió dos años.El mismo Villarroel escribió que:...los extranjeros que vienen a Salamanca, ha muchos años que no preguntan por la Universidad, ni por la plaza, ni por las cuevas donde enseñaban los diablos... sino por don Diego de Torres, pensando encontrar con un monstruo estupendamente afable, o con un oráculo deforme, predicador de misterios, adivinanzas, fortunas, desdichas o despropósitos.La tradición afirma que predijo dos sucesos de enorme relevancia en España y en la historia universal: el motín de Esquilache y la Revolución francesa. Villarroel asimismo participó en concursos públicos, sufrió cárcel y luego fue nombrado vicerrector de la Universidad de Salamanca.
