Why do we exist, what are we and why does it matter? As creatures of logic and reason it seems unreasonable to say that every thought, desire and event in the entire universe has a direct association with the individual. The reason this seems unfathomable is that we are attempting to understand this from an external or ego centered perspective. If we take a brief look at what is happening inside our own physical bodies, we see millions of chemical activities occurring simultaneously and effortlessly. Within our nervous system, neurons are receiving and relaying thousands of electrical signals to control and coordinate all essential functions of your body. Even if we do not take into account the work of the digestive system, the musculoskeletal system, the respiratory system and other networked systems, it is a wonder in and of itself that you are alive and reading these words. This physical manifestation called you, whether fathomable in its entirety or not is who you are! A negative reaction to the statement that you have created everything in your world; body, mind, personality, dreams and shortcomings exemplifies the fact that you see your conscious mind as a sole power broker. Ironically, whether you believe you have self-created this individual called you or not, you would be right in both cases. You the conscious thinker or ego has not, but the larger 'you' the intuitive mind within has.

Chronic pancreatitis is a disease of diverse etiologies in which pain can be devastating, severely impairing quality of life, and treatment is a challenge. This book covers cutting edge basic science research and clinical diagnosis and treatment issues in chronic pancreatitis. Basic science chapters include studies on amelioration of chronic pancreatitis in rats by bone marrow derived mesenchymal cells; on gene therapy using HSV-Enkephalin to reduce fibrosis, inflammation and pain in a rats; and on pancreatic acinar and island neogenesis according to vascular and matrix dynamics of human and animal tissue. In regard to the clinical aspects, the role of endoscopic ultrasound in detecting the changes of chronic pancreatitis are addressed as well as the endoscopic treatment via duct drainage procedures or stone removal. Finally, the surgical options for chronic pancreatitis (there are well over 20 procedures) are extensively discussed, with a final chapter on total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplant to definitively remove the root cause of the pain with preservation of endocrine function. This book will be valued by basic scientists and clinicians striving to understand the mechanisms of pain in chronic pancreatitis and the treatment options in patients so afflicted.
