  • - A Samuel Kumalo Mystery
    af David Slater
    188,95 kr.

Penhalonga, Manicaland, Rhodesia, 1918. A well-liked young teacher at a local mission school is found dead by a night-watchman - victim of a warthog's goring. Matabele ex-policeman Samuel Kumalo, only recently back from the war in France and Tanganyika, is highly sceptical; warthogs are not aggressive animals. His investigation opens up a can of writhing worms. The mission station, outwardly so pious and conservative, is a cover for some very dark activities. Kumalo's hunt for the killer becomes even more desperate when the night-watchman is found dead, and Kumalo's own young family is targeted.

A book of poetry....light, dark, fun, sad. As love is a roller coaster you'd best strap yourself in for the ride. The ups, downs. Ins and outs. The tummy tingling butterfly flight and the acidic tear dripping. Love is for all, and when THE ONE is at your side...an amazing ride.

  • - Collected Verse 1966 - 2012
    af David Slater
    163,95 kr.

The author began writing narrative verse while scarcely into his teens. This collection encompasses his experiences in war-torn Rhodesia in the sixties and seventies, as well as many tableaux of a purely Canadian nature. They range from 'A visit to the circus', and the trials and tribulations of an old dancing horse, to his 'In the Garden' a paean to gardening in North Vancouver. His songs, a number of which can be heard and seen on Youtube via the attached hyper-links, range from a fun-filled 'Martini Man' to 'The Prisoner', a song about race-bias in the North American justice system. His ballad 'The Last voyage of the Rosy Claire' has echoes of Gordon Lightfoot's Edmund Fitzgerald, but with a west coast setting. The song was inspired by the sinking of the BC Ferries' ship Queen of the North.

In the early 1980s, video technology forever changed the face of home entertainment. The videocassette - a handy-sized cartridge of magnetic tape inside a plastic shell - domesticated cinema as families across Britain began to consume films in an entirely new way. Demand was high and the result was a video gold rush, with video rental outlets appearing on every high street almost overnight. Without moderation their shelves filled with all manner of films depicting unbridled sex and violence. A backlash was inevitable. Video was soon perceived as a threat to society, a view neatly summed up in the term 'video nasties'. CANNIBAL ERROR chronicles the phenomenal rise of video culture through a tumultuous decade, its impact and its aftermath. Based on extensive research and interviews, the authors provide a first-hand account of Britain in the 1980s, when video became a scapegoat for a variety of social ills. It examines the confusion spawned by the Video Recordings Act 1984, the subsequent witch hunt that culminated in police raids and arrests, and offers insightful commentary on many contentious and 'banned' films that were cited by the media as influential factors in several murder cases. It also investigates the cottage industry in illicit films that developed as a direct result of the 'video nasty' clampdown. CANNIBAL ERROR, a revised and reworked edition of SEE NO EVIL (2000), is an exhaustive and startling overview of Britain's 'video nasty' panic, the ramifications of which are still felt today.
