John Yeadon and Rowland Kitchen were my ancestors. Each in their own way were exceptional men. They found that they had a life which was theirs to direct. This is what happened.

Yeadon was a woollen textile town in Yorkshire. A tough, hard-working kind of place. This book is a collection of stories about some people who I am related to who ended up there over the centuries. It's a book about events, consequences and owning ones own future.

In the beginning their were three brothers. Sneaky, Slinky and Daft Beggar as they were called by their father. This is the story of the first. His 'Bird on the wire' life, his death walking the Camino de Santiago and my trip across Spain to give him a funeral. As he always used to say..."We have two lives. The first is the ordinary one. The second is the one we have when we realise that we only have one life...and it is happening now. This is how it was for my brother Sneaky. The laughs and some good tunes, the pain and the love.

A biography of an exceptional man. John Yeadon became aware that he had a life and that it was his to direct. It became his project. Self education and unbounded energy drove this project forward. His stage was a small industrial town in the West Riding of Yorkshire over almost decades in the 18th and 19th centuries. He kept a diary for more than fifty of those years and through that we get to know about life in the town, his view of the wider world and most of all his involvement in an unruly Methodist chapel. John's large family, his neighbors and people who pass through the place populate the pages. This book is a view of his life drawn from John's own accounts and extensive research.. It is also a view into the mind of a man who believed he was 'Doing the Work of Wesley', his failings and anxieties.
