This is the second, expanded edition. Curtis J. Badger's Wilderness Regained award-winning book Salt Tide - Cycles and Currents of Life Along the Coast has become a classic when it comes to exploring the natural history of barrier islands and seaside salt marshes. In it, Badger called the chain of islands that lies along the Virginia coast the last of the coastal wilderness, a landscape as wild and unspoiled as the mountains of the West, or the tundra of Alaska. In Wilderness Regained - The Story of the Virginia Barrier Islands, Badger turns his attention to the human presence on the islands. Although wild and remote today, the islands played a colorful and vibrant role in the history of the Eastern Shore and coastal Virginia for more than three centuries. Wilderness Regained tells the story of the many ways in which human lives touched the islands, and how, ultimately, the islands became protected as one of America's unique coastal preserves. "Along with John S. Wise, Curtis J. Badger is the best prose stylist the Eastern Shore has produced." - Brooks Miles Barnes

Captain Thomas W. Badger and his wife, Jennie, were traveling from California aboard the ship Central America when it sank in a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina in September 1857. More than 400 passengers and crew perished in the tragedy, and millions of dollars worth of freshly minted gold went down with the ship. Thomas and Jennie survived the sinking and continued home to Virginia to be reunited with family. They soon returned to California, where Capt. Badger had a shipping business and would later build an amusement park in what is now downtown Oakland. Letters Home is a collection of letters written to relatives back home from Capt. Badger, and later from his nephew, Thomas N. Badger, covering a period from 1863 to 1953.

Join naturalist Curtis J. Badger as he explores the last unspoiled barrier island ecosystem in the eastern United States. Badger's own ancestral roots in the region reach back into the 1600s, a legacy that fuels his passion and appreciation for this fragile confluence of land and sea. A beaded chain of 18 islands separates the inland shore from the Atlantic, and in this zone of protected waters lives a startling array of plants and animals. As he writes about looking for milky ribbon worms in the mudflats or paddling through spartina on a tidal creek, Badger gracefully weaves together personal history and natural science with insight and intelligence. 20 black & white illustrations.
