One of the most familiar popular poems and stories for children is Clement C. Moore's 1823 work A Visit From St Nicholas, which begins: 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even a mouse. . . . and it is so familiar that phrases from it -- like "visions of sugar plums danced in their heads" have become part of our shared memories of warm holidays of the past. Kim Fernandes has illustrated Moore's poem with amazingly evocative sculptural work in FIMO modelling clay, depicting all the events of the poem -- from Santa calling to Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, to his belly that shakes like a bowlful of jelly. . . to his departure, wishing "all a good night" -- vividly, warmly and merrily. It is a marvelously attractive and affordable permanent Christmas gift for new generations of children. The board construction will last (appealing to parents), and the color is bright and full of details kids will love. Bigger than a standard board book, it is attractively priced to be affordable for all budgets.

American writer and professor of literature at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in New York City, Clement C. Moore is best remembered today for his timeless poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". Born in New York City in 1779, Moore would achieve considerable wealth by developing his large inherited estate into what is known today as the residential neighborhood of Chelsea in New York City. Having originally published these verses as "A Visit from St. Nicholas", anonymously on December 23, 1823, Clement C. Moore would acknowledge his authorship of the poem several years later in 1837. This work, arguably one of the most famous poems ever written by an American, would prove to be a profound influence on establishing the legend of Santa Claus in America and his association with gift giving at Christmas time. "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" is presented here in its entirety along with the famous illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith that were first published in 1912 in an edition printed on premium acid-free paper.

"Once upon a time, children imagined St. Nicholas as a stern, skinny bishop who was as likely to dole out discipline as Christmas presents. But thanks to the poem 'Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas'--written by Clement C. Moore in 1822 and published the next year in the Troy Sentinel--a plumper, merrier St. Nick was born, transformed into the sleigh-riding, chimney-diving jolly old elf we now call Santa Claus. With gorgeous monochrome illustrations by Matt Tavares that are meticulously true to pre-Victorian times, this reissue of the holiday favorite 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Or Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas honors the poem's original language in a definitive keepsake volume"--
