El presente volumen se propone arrojar nueva luz sobre la relación de Miguel de Cervantes con los desarrollos del Humanismo en la Europa de su tiempo. Redactadas por especialistas de la obra cervantina, las contribuciones reunidas aquí dan claras pruebas de la presencia de la tradición humanista en Cervantes, mostrando que el poeta eruditus debía disponer de los conocimientos de la Antigüedad para tener éxito en su imitatio. Documentan, entre otros aspectos, cómo los planteamientos neoplatónicos quedan relativizados mediante una retórica de la persuasión; qué importancia tiene el pensamiento utópico para la propia realidad; cómo en último término los diálogos oscilan entre la argumentación objetiva y el estado afectivo, entre la voluntad de cooperación y el ansia de poder; qué papel juegan la retórica de la agudeza en la lírica cervantina y la retórica de la predicación en el Persiles y qué reflexión iconológica encontramos en Cervantes; y, por último, que el Don Quijote pudo leerse durante la Ilustración como un alegato en favor de la experiencia y utilidad, y más tarde como paradigma de la prioridad, representada por el idealismo alemán, de la idea frente a la realidad.

What is the value of conversation measured by? Are there more valuable and inferior types of conversation? What role do the contents, the people, and the circumstances play? Do times and epochs shape their own conversations? Conversation norms from handbooks as well as conversations reproduced in texts or reconstructed from texts shed light on these questions. The contributions in this volume are grouped around conceptual questions, specific contexts such as the salon and the table conversation, bring studies on individual literary texts and cover the European cultural history from Plato to the 20th century. Information Text: In the early modern period, numerous texts deal with professions by presenting the knowledge required in each case, individual fields of activity, purpose, origin and prestige. The course of argumentation is humanistic, insofar as it mostly starts from the human being. The ancient idea of the primacy of mental work over manual work is formative here. The importance of Spain results from the fact that the Spanish king Charles V was both emperor and ruler of the colonies in America, i.e. he ruled a world empire by the standards of the time. After discussing some central categories, overall representations of knowledge, professions, and prominent professional representatives are presented. Here, the hierarchization and its relativization by satire is revealing. The mechanical arts and the artes liberales are then presented on the basis of individual professions selected as characteristic examples, each with its own specific knowledge. The higher faculties of medicine, theology and jurisprudence with their representatives form the conclusion.

Woran wird der Wert der Konversation gemessen? Gibt es wertvollere und minderwertige Typen der Konversation? Welche Rolle kommt den Inhalten, den Personen und den Umstanden zu? Pragen Zeiten und Epochen die je ihnen eigenen Konversationen? Konversationsnormen aus Handbuchern ebenso wie in Texten wiedergegebene oder aus Texten rekonstruierte Konversationen geben Aufschluss uber diese Fragen. Die Beitrage im vorliegenden Band gruppieren sich um begriffliche Fragen, bestimmte Kontexte wie den Salon und das Tischgesprach, bringen Studien zu einzelnen literarischen Texten und decken dabei die europaische Kulturgeschichte von Platon bis ins 20. Jahrhundert ab.

Bedeutend ist Theophrast von Hohenheim (ca. 1493/4¿1541), genannt Paracelsus, vor allem durch sein Aufbegehren gegen die klassischen antiken und arabisch-mittelalterlichen Autoritäten in der Medizin. Grundlage sollen nicht mehr die überlieferten Schriften, sondern experientia, experimenta und ratio sein. Von dieser Basis soll künftig ausgegangen werden, was Paracelsus auch dadurch unterstreicht, dass er seine Schriften in deutscher Sprache veröffentlicht. Indem er sich gegen die dogmatische Auslegung antiker Texte wandte, wollte er die Ära Galens beenden. Die Chirurgie wollte er auf universitären Rang erheben. Nach Paracelsus ist es die Natur, die heilt, wobei der Arzt nur Helfer ist. Wenn er Gesundheit als harmonische Ordnung im organischen Ablauf definiert, dann ist er bestrebt, Makrokosmos und Mikrokosmos, Diesseits und Jenseits, in Einklang zu bringen. Die Welt ist für ihn kein Nebeneinander isolierter Elemente, sondern eine Einheit. Auch beimMenschen erscheint ihm Sinnliches und Seelisches aufeinander bezogen. Archeus nennt er ein immaterielles Prinzip, in dem er den Träger der belebenden Kraft in der Natur und im Menschen, also im Makrokosmos wie im Mikrokosmos, festmacht. Im Sinne der Renaissance sieht er den Menschen als Mittelpunkt des Kosmos und seine Aufgabe im Erkennen der Welt.
