Da rigets marsk, Stig Andersen, drager i kamp mod svenskerne, efterlader han sin hustru Ingeborg i kong Erik Glippings varetægt. Den kvindeglade konge forfører i marskens fravær fru Ingeborg, og da Stig kommer hjemmer og opdager det, undsiger han kongen og slår sig sammen med en gruppe adelige og præster, der ligesom han, men af forskellige årsager, også er utilfredse med kongens adfærd. Med bistand af kongens kammertjener Rane Johnsen får de lokket kongen i et baghold i Finderup Lade syd for Viborg. Udfaldet er velkendt …Det er handlingen i Christian Richardt lille skuespil "Drot og Marsk", skrevet i samarbejde med komponisten Peter Heise i 1878, og tekstunderlaget for Heises nationalromantiske opera af samme navn. Det er dog ikke ord til andet samme tekst som operalibrettoen - som forfatteren skriver i et lille forord: "I musikken er et og andet mindre stykke udeladt".
