Wir hatten uns der ersten Herde, die aus etwa fünfzig bis sechzig Stück bestand, auf eine Viertelmeile genähert."Charles Sealsfield, ein Pseudonym von Karl Postl, war ein mährischer Schriftsteller und wurde 1793 in Poppitz bei Znaim geboren. Sealsfield stammte aus einer bäuerlichen Familie. Er studierte zunächst im Jesuitengymnasium in Znaim, dann Theologie in Prag und empfing 1814 die Priesterweihe. 1823 floh er in die Schweiz und dann weiter in die USA, wo er die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft unter dem Namen Chalres Sidons annahm. 1826 kehrte er nach Europa zurück, arbeitete u. a. als Journalist und ließ erste schriftstellerische Werke veröffentlichen. Nach einem abermaligen Aufenthalt in den USA ließ er sich in der Schweiz nieder und erlangte mit mehreren zunächst anonym veröffentlichten Romanen auch internationale Erfolge. Sealsfield pflegte Kontakte zu Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Börne und Walter Scott. Er starb 1864 in Solothurn.Hugo von Hofmannsthal über Charles Sealsfield:In Sealsfield ist etwas vorgebildet und nichts Geringes: der deutsche Amerikaner. Die Seele ist deutsch, aber durch eine fremde große Schule durchgegangen. Er reiht sich an die andern, und ist doch besonders. Haben sie ihn drüben vergessen, so ist es traurig, hier durfte er nicht fehlen, er erzählt in einer Weise, daß keiner ihn vergißt, der ihm einmal zugehört hat.
