Chronicling his own journey from Southampton to the Spanish Main. Charles Kingsley was an English clergymen, novelist, and historian, best known perhaps for his book The Water Babies. In At Last: A Christmas in the West Indies, Kingsley recounts his travels to the West Indies, largely focused on Trinidad, in 1869. It is in many ways a typical 'travel' book of its time, rich in description and presenting an 'imperial' position and outlook on the colony, although as critics such as Claudia Brandenstein, Simon Gikandi and Catherine Hall have pointed out, this position is complicated and, as Kingsley was sympathetic to the idea of evolution and was one of the first to praise Charles Darwin, in some respects an ambivalent one. Kingsley went to the West Indies with liberal and Christian sympathies, but he found it difficult to be objective about what he witnessed due to his theological background and intellectual tradition. For example, he supported the strict control and supervision of the indentured Coolies, even though in England he was a strong advocate of emancipation and the creation of a '"moral bond"' between employee and employer. Gikandi argues that Kingsley reached this conclusion about the West Indian context not because of what he saw there or because of his understanding of the Coolies' own views and perspectives. "Rather the traveler reaches his conclusions from three mutually informing sources: official reports (both oral and written), intellectual Orientalism, and evolutionary doctrines."

Health and Education is a classic health and wellness text by Charles Kingsley. We talk of our hardy forefathers; and rightly. But they were hardy, just as the savage is usually hardy, because none but the hardy lived. They may have been able to say of themselves--as they do in a state paper of 1515, now well known through the pages of Mr. Froude: "What comyn folk of all the world may compare with the comyns of England, in riches, freedom, liberty, welfare, and all prosperity? What comyn folk is so mighty, and so strong in the felde, as the comyns of England?" Charles Kingsley was an English clergyman, university professor, historian, and novelist, particularly associated with the West Country and north-east Hampshire. He was educated at Helston Grammar School before studying at King's College London, and the University of Cambridge. Charles entered Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1838, and graduated in 1842. He chose to pursue a ministry in the church. From 1844, he was rector of Eversley in Hampshire, and in 1860, he was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge. His writing shows an impulse to reconfigure social realities into dream geographies through Christian idealism.

""The Ancient Regime"" is a historical non-fiction book written by Charles Kingsley. The book explores the political and social systems of the European monarchies during the 18th century, particularly in France. Kingsley examines the power structures, customs, and beliefs that governed the lives of the aristocracy and the common people during this time period. He also discusses the Enlightenment movement and its impact on the political and social landscape of Europe. The book provides a detailed analysis of the French Revolution and its aftermath, including the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. Kingsley examines the causes and consequences of the revolution, and argues that it was a necessary and inevitable step towards progress and democracy. Overall, ""The Ancient Regime"" is a comprehensive and insightful exploration of European history during the 18th century, and provides a valuable perspective on the events that shaped modern Europe. For by that time the mighty spiritual struggles and fierce religious animosities of the preceding century had worn themselves out. And, as always happens, to a period of earnest excitement had succeeded one of weariness, disgust, half-unbelief in the many questions for which so much blood had been shed. No man had come out of the battle with altogether clean hands. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Alton Locke is an 1850 novel, by Charles Kingsley, written in sympathy with the Chartist movement, in which Carlyle is introduced as one of the personages. In this novel, Kingsley set out to expose the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and the trials and tribulations of agricultural labourers. It also gives an insight into the Chartist campaign with which Kingsley was involved in the 1840s Alton Locke is the story of a young tailor-boy who has instincts and aspirations beyond the normal expectations of his working-class background. He is intensely patriotic and has ambitions to be a poet. In the course of the narrative, Alton Locke loves and struggles in vain. Physically, he is a weak man, but is able to encompass all the best emotions, along with vain longings, wild hopes, and a righteous indignation at the plight of his contemporaries. He joins the Chartist movement because he can find no better vehicle by which to improve the lot of the working class, experiencing a sense of devastation at its apparent failure. Utterly broken in spirit, Alton Locke sails for America to seek a new life there; however, he barely reaches the shore of the New World before he dies.
