In the discussion on Sexual Selection in my 'Descent of Man, ' no case interested and perplexed me so much as the brightly-coloured hinder ends and adjoining parts of certain monkeys. As these parts are more brightly coloured in one sex than the other, and as they become more brilliant during the season of love, I concluded that the colours had been gained as a sexual attraction

This volume is the second in a series of letters that have been previously unpublished, providing a unique insight into Darwin's thoughts and work during his lifetime. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including his research on evolution, his personal life, and his interactions with other scientists and colleagues. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the most influential figures in the history of science and is a must-read for anyone interested in Darwin's life and work.1903. Part Two of Two. Edited by Francis Darwin and A.C. Seward. Illustrated. Including an Autobiographical Chapter. A selection of letters written by Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. The volume contains a series of letters, now published for the first time, prepared so as to give as full an idea as possible of the course of Mr. Darwin's work. The volumes therefore necessarily contain many letters of a highly technical character. The letters are classified according to subject-into such as deal with Evolution, Geographical Distribution, Botany, etc., and within each group they are placed chronologically. 168,95 - 298,95 kr. Charles Robert Darwin, FRS (12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. Darwin published his theory with compelling evidence for evolution in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favoured competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. In modified form, Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining thediversity of life. -wikipedia

Originally published in 1839, this edition was published in 1905. The book documents Darwin's five-year journey around the world aboard the HMS Beagle, during which he made observations and collected specimens of plants, animals, and fossils. The book provides a detailed account of his experiences and discoveries, including his observations on the geology, flora, and fauna of South America, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and other regions. Darwin's observations on the diversity of species, adaptation, and natural selection, which he later developed into his theory of evolution, are also included in the book. The Journal of Researches is considered a classic of natural history and travel writing, and continues to be widely read and studied by scientists and scholars today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 385,95 - 414,95 kr. 1885. Part Two of Two. Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection, writes in the introduction: The object of this work is not to describe all the many races of animals which have been domesticated by man, and of the plants which have been cultivated by him; even if I possessed the requisite knowledge, so gigantic an undertaking would be here superfluous. It is my intention to give under the head of each species only such facts as I have been able to collect or observe, showing the amount and nature of the changes which animals and plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion, or which bear on the general principles of variation. Contents: Inheritance Reversion or Atavism; Inheritance Fixedness of Character, Prepotency, Sexual Limitation, Correspondence of Age; On Crossing; Causes which Interfere with the Free Crossing of Varieties, Influence of Domestication on Fertility; On the Good Effects of Crossing and on the Evil Effects of Close Interbreeding; On the Advantages and Disadvantages of Changed Conditions of Life: Sterility from Various Causes; Summary of the Four Last Chapters, with Remarks on Hybridism; Selection by Man; Causes of Variability; Direct and Definite Action of the External Conditions of Life; Laws of Variation, Use and Disuse, etc.; Correlated Variability; Summary; Provisional Hypothesis of Pangenesis; and Concluding Remarks. 404,95 kr. The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication V1 is a book written by Charles Darwin that explores the process of domestication and how it affects the variations in animals and plants. The book is divided into two volumes, with the first volume discussing the variations in animals and the second volume focusing on plants. In this book, Darwin examines how domestication has led to changes in the physical characteristics of animals and plants, as well as their behavior and physiology. He also discusses the role of artificial selection in shaping these variations, and how these changes can be passed down from one generation to the next. The book is based on Darwin's extensive research and observations, and includes numerous examples and case studies from his own experiments and those of other scientists. It also includes detailed illustrations and diagrams to help readers better understand the concepts and theories presented.Overall, The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication V1 is a seminal work in the field of evolutionary biology, and remains a valuable resource for scientists and researchers interested in the process of domestication and the variations that occur in animals and plants.1885. Your letters are one of my greatest pleasures in life, but I earnestly beg you never to write unless you feel somewhat inclined, for I know how hard you work, as I work only in the morning it is different with me, and is only a pleasant relaxation. You will never know how much I owe to you for your constant kindness and encouragement. LETTER 613. TO JOHN LUBBOCK (Lord Avebury). Cliff Cottage, Bournemouth, Hants, September 2nd 1862. Hearty thanks for your note. I am so glad that your tour answered so splendidly. My poor patients (613/1. Mrs. Darwin and one of her sons, both recovering from scarlet fever.) got here yesterday, and are doing well, and we have a second house for the well ones. I write now in great haste to beg you to look (though I know how busy you are, but I cannot think of any other naturalist who would be careful) at any field of common red clover (if such a field is near you) and watch the hive-bees: probably (if not too late) you will see some sucking at the mouth of the little flowers and some few sucking at the base of the flowers, at holes bitten through the corollas. All that you will see is that the bees put their heads deep into the flower head and rout about. Now, if you see this, do for Heaven's sake catch me some of each and put in spirits and keep them separate. I am almost certain that they belong to two castes, with long and short proboscids. This...
