320,95 kr. Man and His Superstitions is a fascinating book that explores the origins and evolution of human superstitions. Written by Carveth Read, a renowned psychologist and anthropologist, the book delves into the various beliefs, rituals, and practices that have shaped human societies throughout history. The book begins by defining superstitions and examining their role in human culture. It then goes on to explore the different types of superstitions, such as religious, magical, and folk beliefs, and how they have been used to explain natural phenomena, predict the future, and control events.Read also examines the psychological and social factors that contribute to superstitions, including fear, uncertainty, and the need for control. He also explores the ways in which superstitions have been used to justify social hierarchies and reinforce power structures.Throughout the book, Read draws on a wide range of examples from different cultures and time periods, including ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, and contemporary Africa. He also includes fascinating case studies of individuals who have been affected by superstitions, such as those who have undergone exorcisms or who have been accused of witchcraft.Overall, Man and His Superstitions is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of one of the most enduring aspects of human culture. It offers a unique perspective on the ways in which superstitions have shaped our beliefs, our behaviors, and our societies, and provides a valuable resource for anyone interested in psychology, anthropology, or the history of human culture.1925. The first part of this work explains a hypothesis that the human race has descended from some ape-like stock by a series of changes which began and were maintained by the practice of hunting in packs for animal food, instead of being content with the fruits and other nutritious products of the tropical forest. The time came when hunting was no longer the chief means of livelihood and a group of men and women were kept together by belief in the magical powers of some of their number, enabling them to enforce the group's customs and direct its movements. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 343,95 kr. The Metaphysics of Nature is a philosophical book written by Carveth Read, which explores the nature of reality and the fundamental principles that govern it. The book delves into the metaphysical aspects of nature and investigates the relationship between the physical world and the world of ideas. Read begins by examining the different theories of reality that have been proposed throughout history, including those of Plato, Aristotle, and Descartes. He then goes on to discuss the concept of causality, the nature of time and space, and the role of perception in shaping our understanding of the world. The author also explores the idea of universals, or the fundamental properties that are shared by all things in the world. He argues that these universals are not simply abstract concepts, but rather have a real existence in the world. Throughout the book, Read draws on examples from the natural world to illustrate his ideas, ranging from the behavior of subatomic particles to the complex interactions of ecosystems. He also discusses the implications of his metaphysical theories for ethics, aesthetics, and the philosophy of science. Overall, The Metaphysics of Nature is a thought-provoking and comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles that underlie our understanding of the world around us.1905.
