Rubaiyat of a Motor Car is a collection of poetry written by American author Carolyn Wells and published in 1906. The book consists of a series of quatrains, or four-line stanzas, that humorously describe the joys and challenges of driving a motor car in the early 20th century. The poems are written in the style of the Rubaiyat, a form of Persian poetry made famous by the poet Omar Khayyam. Wells uses this form to explore the pleasures of the open road, the thrill of speed, and the freedom that comes with driving a car. She also pokes fun at the various mishaps and inconveniences that can occur while driving, such as getting lost or running out of gas.Throughout the book, Wells demonstrates a deep love and appreciation for the automobile, which was still a relatively new invention at the time. She celebrates the sense of adventure and possibility that comes with driving a car, while also acknowledging the responsibility that comes with operating such a powerful machine.Overall, Rubaiyat of a Motor Car is a charming and witty collection of poetry that captures the spirit of early 20th century driving culture. It offers a unique glimpse into the world of the early automobile enthusiast and is sure to delight readers who appreciate both poetry and vintage cars. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. "How old are you, Patty?" asked her father, abruptly. "Fourteen, papa, -why?" "My conscience! what a great girl you're getting to be. Stand up and let me look at you." Patty Fairfield, with two twists and a spring, brought herself to her feet, and stood awaiting her father's inspection. He saw a slender, graceful girl, a Southern blonde of the purest type. Her pretty golden hair would gladly have hung in curly masses, but it was only allowed to have its own sweet will around her temples and at the end of a long thick braid. Her eyes were blue, deep and twinkly, and the rest of her face was as pretty and sweet as soft girlish contours and a perfect complexion could make it. But best of all was the gentle expression and frank, good-natured smile which so often broke into mischievous dimples. It did on this occasion, and Patty laughed merrily at her father's grave consideration of her.... Carolyn Wells (June 18, 1862 - March 26, 1942) was an American writer and poet. Life and career: Born in Rahway, New Jersey, she was the daughter of William E. and Anna Wells. She died at the Flower-Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York City in 1942. Wells had been married to Hadwin Houghton, the heir of the Houghton-Mifflin publishing empire founded by Bernard Houghton. Wells also had an impressive collection of volumes of poetry by others. She bequeathed her collection of Walt Whitman poetry, said to be one of the most important of its kind for its completeness and rarity, to the Library of Congress. After finishing school she worked as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. Her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896), was a collection of charades. Her next publications were The Jingle Book and The Story of Betty (1899), followed by a book of verse entitled Idle Idyls (1900). After 1900, Wells wrote numerous novels and collections of poetry. Carolyn Wells wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), she heard That Affair Next Door (1897), one of Anna Katharine Green's mystery novels, being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unraveling of the puzzle. From that point onward she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories which-according to Allen J. Hubin's Crime Fiction IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000 (2003)-number 61 titles. Wells's The Clue (1909) is on the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone list of essential mysteries. She was also the first to conduct a (brief, in this case) annual series devoted to the best short crime fiction of the previous year in the U.S., beginning with The Best American Mystery Stories of the Year (1931) (though others had begun a similar British series in 1929). In addition to books, Wells also wrote for newspapers. Her poetry accompanies the work of some of the leading lights in illustration and cartooning, often in the form of Sunday magazine cover features that formed continuing narratives from week to week. Her first known illustrated newspaper work is a two part series titled Animal Alphabet, illustrated by William F. Marriner, which appeared in the Sunday comics section of the New York World. Many additional series ensued over the years, including the bizarre classic Adventures of Lovely Lilly (New York Herald, 1906-07). The last series she penned was Flossy Frills Helps Out (American Weekly, 1942), which appeared after her death. Today, however, she is best known for her light verse, particularly for several classic limericks, including this one: A canner exceedingly canny One morning remarked to his granny: "A canner can can Any thing that he can But a canner can't can a can, can he?"

"Patty, do come along and get your luncheon before everything grows cold!" "'And the stars are old, And the leaves of the judgment book unfold, '" chanted Patty, who had just learned this new song, and was apt to sing it at unexpected moments. She sat on the floor in the middle of the long drawing-room of her New York home. To say she was surrounded by flowers, faintly expresses it. She was hemmed in, barricaded, nearly smothered in flowers. They were or had been in enormous florist's boxes, and as fast as Patty opened the boxes and read the cards which accompanied the blossoms, Jane took the boxes away. It was the great occasion of Patty's début, and in accordance with the social custom, all her friends had sent her flowers as a message of congratulation. "You certainly have heaps of friends," said Elise, who was helping arrange the bouquets.
