La commedia narra una vicenda di disordine familiare che culmina nel tentativo da parte della moglie Beatrice e del figlio Ottaviano di avvelenare il vecchio mercante Pantalone. Il piano criminale è però sventato dal sacrificio della cagnetta Perlina che mangia, prima del padrone, una "panatella" all'arsenico. Al calare del sipario l'eloquenza di Pantalone, "l'uomo prudente", ottiene davanti ai giudici, l'assoluzione degli imputati. La "prudenza" vela e occulta il dissesto della struttura familiare nella società veneta della seconda metà del Settecento.
