There are certain fundamental principles of sound community life which cannot be stated too emphatically or too often. Few public men of to-day have shown a finer combination of right feeling and clear thinking about these principles, with a gift for the pithy expression of them, than has Governor Calvin Coolidge. It was an accurate phrase that President Meiklejohn used when, in conferring the degree of Doctor of Laws on him at Amherst College last June, he complimented him on teaching the lesson of "adequate brevity." His speeches and messages abound in evidences of this gift, but in the main the speeches are not easily accessible. It has seemed to some of Governor Coolidge's admirers, as it has to the publishers of this little volume, that a real public service might be rendered by making a careful selection from the best of the speeches and issuing them in an attractive and convenient form. With his permission this has been done, and it is hoped that many readers will welcome the book in this time of special need of inspiring and steadying influences. It is a time when all men should realize that, in the words of Governor Coolidge himself, "Laws must rest on the eternal foundations of righteousness"; that "Industry, thrift, character are not conferred by act or resolve. Government cannot relieve from toil." It is a time when we must "have faith in Massachusetts. We need a broader, firmer, deeper faith in the people, -a faith that men desire to do right, that the Commonwealth is founded upon a righteousness which will endure."

The ""State Of The Union Addresses"" by Calvin Coolidge is a collection of speeches given by the 30th President of the United States during his tenure in office from 1923 to 1929. These speeches were delivered to Congress and the American people and aimed to provide an overview of the current state of the country and outline the president's plans and priorities for the future. The book includes all of Coolidge's annual addresses to Congress, as well as some special messages and speeches he gave on various occasions. The speeches cover a wide range of topics, including the economy, foreign policy, social issues, and government reform.Throughout the book, readers will gain insight into Coolidge's conservative political philosophy and his belief in limited government and individual responsibility. His speeches often emphasize the importance of fiscal responsibility and the need for a balanced budget.Overall, the ""State Of The Union Addresses"" by Calvin Coolidge provides a fascinating look into the political and social climate of the 1920s and the priorities of one of America's most notable presidents. We still have an enormous debt of over $20,000,000,000, on which the interest and sinking-fund requirements are $1,320,000,000. Our appropriations for the Pension Office and the Veterans' Bureau are $600,000,000. The War and Navy Departments call for $642,000,000. Other requirements, exclusive of the Post Office ' which is virtually self-sustaining, brought the appropriations for the current year up to almost C3,100,060,000. This shows an expenditure of close to $30 for every inhabitant of our country. For the average family of five it means a tax, directly or indirectly paid, of about $150 for national purposes alone. The local tax adds much more. These enormous expenditures ought not to be increased, but through every possible effort they ought to be reduced. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
