198,95 kr. The importance of the subject treated in this study, as well as the prominent part played by the Australian evidence in the problem of kinship, will, it is believed, amply justify a detailed inquiry into the institution of the family in Australia. It is, however, always desirable for a monograph like the present one, besides being a mere collection and description of facts, to have a sufficiently wide theoretical scope. It ought to demonstrate some general principle upon the particular example treated, and to approach the problem from a new standpoint. I wish here shortly to indicate how far a slight and imperfect attempt in this direction has been made. In describing the facts of family life in Australia I have tried to show that even if the problems of origins and development of an institution be put aside and the inquiry be limited to the actual facts (in this case to the actual working of the aboriginal kinship organization), there are plenty of subjects of great theoretical importance, some of which, as yet not fully considered by sociologists.

The Sexual Life of Savages in North Western Melanesia is a book by Bronislaw Malinowski that explores the sexual practices and customs of the Trobriand Islanders, a group of people living in the Western Pacific. The book is based on Malinowski's fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands between 1915 and 1918. The book provides a detailed account of the Trobriand Islanders' sexual practices, including their attitudes towards sex, courtship rituals, marriage customs, and sexual taboos. Malinowski also discusses the role of sexuality in Trobriand society, including its connection to social status, power, and religion. The Sexual Life of Savages in North Western Melanesia is considered a seminal work in the field of anthropology, as it was one of the first studies to focus on the cultural aspects of sexuality. The book is also notable for its use of participant observation, a research method that involves living with and studying a group of people in their natural environment. Overall, The Sexual Life of Savages in North Western Melanesia is a fascinating and informative study of a unique culture's sexual practices and beliefs. It remains an important work in the field of anthropology and is recommended for anyone interested in the study of human sexuality and culture.1929. An ethnographic account of courtship, marriage and family life among the natives of the Trobriand Islands, British New Guinea. From the Preface: The sexual life of savages has long awaited its natural historian. Owing to sex taboos, that weigh at least as much on the civilized as on the savage mind, this subject has always been veiled in mystery. The mystery has been fascinating or somber according to the general attitude to savagery that happened to prevail. Contents: The Relations Between the Sexes in Tribal Life; The Status of Woman in Native Society; Prenuptial Intercourse; The Avenues to Marriage; Marriage; Divorce and the Dissolution of Marriage by Death; Procreation and Pregnancy in Native Belief and Custom; Pregnancy and Childbirth; Customary Forms of License; Love-Making and the Psychology of Erotic Life; The Magic of Love and Beauty; Erotic Dreams and Fantasies; Morals and Manners; and A Savage Myth of Incest. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

508,95 kr. 2012 Reprint of 1929 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Profusely illustrated. All original illustrations have been retained and re-screened for this reprint edition. "The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia" contains ethnographic data that attempts to establish that the Freudian Oedipus complex is not universal. This important work is his second in the trilogy on the Trobrianders, with the other two being "Argonauts of the Western Pacific" (1922), and "Coral Gardens and Their Magic" (1935). In the preface Malinowski says that sexuality "dominates in fact almost every aspect of culture". Malinowski provides a detailed description of the social organization of sexuality - social rites, partner choice, et al - "tracing the Trobriand lifecycle from birth through puberty, marriage, and death".Children don't submit to a system of "domestic coercion" or "regular discipline" - they "enjoy considerable freedom and independence". The idea of a child being "beaten or otherwise punished in cold blood" by a parent is viewed as unnatural and immoral and when proposed by westerners (like the anthropologist) is "rejected with resentment". Things are asked "as from one equal to another; a simple command, implying the expectation of natural obedience, is never heard from parent to child in the Trobriands". The event of a person getting angry and striking another person "in an outburst of rage" sometimes happens but as often from parent to child as from child to parent. In further chapters, the parent-child relationship of the Trobrianders is described with details of their complex matrilineal relationship structure in which the biological parentage is ignored.

198,95 kr. Bronislaw Malinowski's pathbreaking Argonauts of the Western Pacific is at once a detailed account of exchange in the Melanesian islands and a manifesto of a modernist anthropology. Malinowski argued that the goal of which the ethnographer should never lose sight is 'to grasp the native's point of view, his relation to life, to realise his vision of his world.' Through vivid evocations of Kula life, including the building and launching of canoes, fishing expeditions and the role of myth and magic amongst the Kula people, Malinowski brilliantly describes an inter-island system of exchange - from gifts from father to son to swapping fish for yams - around which an entire community revolves.A classic of anthropology that did much to establish the primacy of painstaking fieldwork over the earlier anecdotal reports of travel writers, journalists and missionaries, it is a compelling insight into a world now largely lost from view.
