Drawing on his own familiarity with the sources, he opens up for us the inner life of Ignatius in so far as it can be known. Brian O'Leary, an Irish Jesuit, has been researching and writing on Ignatian spirituality since the 1970s. This is a collection of his essays that have appeared in spirituality journals in a number of countries.

After an initial chapter on the origins of religious life, I devote two chapters each to poverty, chastity, and obedience. Only these values can explain why people enter and flourish in religious life. All religious, without distinction, are called to be "radical and free".
