On April 1, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee realized his Army of Northern Virginia cannot survive General Grant's spring offensive as the Union Army overwhelms his beleaguered forces in Petersburg, Virginia. Lee selects six cavalry riders to carry a very important message to President Jefferson Davis in Richmond. Only one rider survives the dangerous twenty-mile ride to the Confederate Capital. Young cavalry lieutenant Johnny Ingram delivers his message to President Davis that the city must be immediately abandoned and the Confederate government moved to Danville, Virginia. On the night that Richmond is evacuated and burned, Johnny is forced to take a beautiful southern belle, Caroline Stephens on a daring and dangerous journey through enemy territory to Danville. During their seven-day ride, they must seek shelter in a prison camp, a Confederate hospital, an arsenal, a historic tavern, a farmer's field and a plantation house. When finally reaching Danville, President Davis assigns Johnny to guard the treasury train and Caroline becomes a personal assistant to the presidential family. Follow Johnny and Caroline on a venturesome wild ride as they travel from Danville through the Carolinas and into Georgia, as the Union Army desperately tries to capture them before escaping to a foreign country. Their hardships include railroad tracks and bridges that have been destroyed by Union Army, but their travels continue by wagon train, ferries and pontoon bridges. This book has romance, adventure, intrigue and old Civil War photographs to guide the reader through an action-packed story. An interesting conclusion gives the reader a historical documentary of accurate facts and speculation from treasure hunters what might have actually happened to the lost Confederate gold and silver during the final days of the Civil War.
